Also if anyone in the UK/US can tell me the US equivalent of a King Size bed that would help too! First, we do have king size beds here, I'm not sure if there is any difference in size from Eurpoe. how much are you looking to spend? Bloomingdales has really great sheet sales. I'm not sure when you are coming but they have them often. You can get an 11% visitors discount. Plus when you open a Bloomingdales charge card you get 10% (?) off the first day. They have a private lable sheet called Hudson Park that are 460 thread count. The Hotel Collection in Macys is the same manufacturer. You can also get the 11% discount there. Century 21 has some really nice sheets at good prices.
however it is a discount department store and I usually have a hard time finding a complete set. If you are picky about everything matching it's hard there. If you are looking for very high end there are stores like Pratesi and Frette. But that really gets up there in price. I am an American living in the UK and a king in the UK is a Queen in the states. Saying that my US sheets still don't fit our bed here snug. At home we usually spend around $200 equivalent dollars on a duvet cover but we don't mind paying more for good quality items. Your best bet is to measure your mattress in INCHES at home before you come. Our king size is 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. As mentioned above, in the UK, what they call a king is equivalent to our queen which is 66 x 80. One problem (and a big gripe for me) is the new fitted sheets are very deep, made for the new thicker pillow top mattresses. So if you have an older mattress that's not pillow top, many of the fitted sheets will slide around.
Some are worse than others so pay attention to what the depth says. That's probably the problem mentioned above. I agree that Macy's and also Bloomingdales would be good for you b/c both offer visitors an extra 11% discount. Very expensive sheets/duvets are actually more common now. I used to find some good sale items at Schweitzer linens at this time of year. Don't know when you're coming. They have 3 locations. There are discount linen shops on the lower east side that tend to carry more basics like solid colors in good quality. And whiz, I know what you're talking about--before we got our new mattress and boxspring, we had the same problem with the sheets!

However, as said earlier, it's hard to get complete sets. If you are looking for basic solid colours, it's a good option. I have gotten 400/500 TC sheets for around $40/50 at discount stores. Just feel the material first, not all high thread count sheets are created equal. Frette has an outlet at Woodbury Commons. However, even at the outlet their stuff runs into the thousands. In the US, we have a size called "California King". Standard US King: 76" wide x 80" long California King: 72" wide x 84" long Standard King linens are very common here. California King, less so (probably due to small real estate in NYC!! I know some studio apartments that are smaller than that! But places like Bloomingdales, Gracious Home, Linen's & Things and Bed Bath Beyond will have California King linens.
