People with disabilities remain a marginalized population in many developing countries. Disability issues are not a priority for government funding in most African countries. People with disabilities tend to be poorer, less educated, and have fewer employment opportunities; those in rural areas are especially impacted with little or no access to services. The few disability centers and clinics that do exist are underfunded and lack the appropriate resources to properly serve those in need. Uhambo's wheelchair center will serve wheelchair users, hospitals and medical centers with repair and maintenance services, while providing a strong mentoring and training program to develop job skills for people with disabilities.

This viable enterprise offers a unique opportunity to create meaningful employment while providing improved quality of life to wheelchair users and their families. The center will provide: wheelchairs, clinical support, training, repair and maintenance and job skills. The wheelchair center will be run as an enterprise and serve people with disabilities in an under-resourced region of Kenya and create the following results: *Jobs & training for people with disabilities: Up to 30 jobs will be created over the first few years *Mobility services & products: Uhambo aims to reach 4,500 people in need *Community awareness & advocating for people with disabilities within the local community *Decrease in health care costs to the family and the system This project has provided additional documentation in a PDF file (projdoc.pdf). Uhambo will partner with NONDO Fort Collins, Colorado - USA Combined with other sources of funding, this project raised enough money to fund the outlined activities and is no longer accepting donations.

Support another project run by Uhambo that needs your help, such as: Inclusivity for disabled children in South Africa Kenya: Locally Made Electric Wheelchair Unveiled Physically challenged persons in the country have one more reason to smile following the unveiling of an ultramodern wheelchair. An Electric Convertible (E-con) wheelchair that exhibited at the just ended Nairobi Innovation Week has been designed to overcome the many challenges of physical disability. The brains behind the innovation is one Peter Mbiria, a student at Nairobi's Technical University of Kenya. E-con wheelchair, still a prototype, will cost up to Sh400,000 once rolled out. Weighing in on the salient features of his handiwork, Mr Mbiria said: "E-con is a wheelchair that will enable physically challenged persons to be very mobile, very independent, and very comfortable." The wheelchair's auto balancing feature removes the need for the person to adjust the seat while moving on rugged terrain or going upstairs.

Yet that is just part of the possibilities presented by the model . According to the designer, the wheelchair's cost makes up for the lifetime cost of physical disability.
