My son (C5 tetraplegic) is in the Philippines for an extended holiday. He is now in Bacolod, Negros Occidental, where his nurse is from. He would like to spend some time at a nice beach with a good social scene. He would travel by private car / ferry from Bacolod. As travelling is difficult for him it would be good to find a place that would be worth spending a few weeks at -- with a really nice beach for swimming, cafés and bars for hanging out and meeting people and decent budget to mid-range accommodation. Given the time of year, any recommendations? And generally, any suggestions for sightseeing / beach resorts elsewhere in the Philippines that are relatively accessible for a wheelchair user? Copy and paste the url below to share the link.I replied before reading further. Hope others read this post and reply.Hi, I travelled in the Philippines extensively – albeit a long time ago and before I was in a wheelchair! Particularly if your son is travelling with a local, I don't think he will have any problem getting around because Filipinos are among the most helpful, friendly and kind people I have ever come across.

While the infrastructure may not be there, there will always be helping hands – and since there is also a great deal of financial need, your son will be able to pay for assistance when he needs it. When I travelled in India with my power wheelchair, I simply paid bystanders the equivalent of a dollar each to lift my chair in and out of an unmodified minivan – and we were all happy! I'm sure this will be the same in the Philippines if your son need to transfer himself and his wheelchair in and out of boats and vehicles.Martin HengAccessible Travel Manager, Lonely PlanetIn response to #2Martin thank you so much for your reply and your helpful suggestions. We are still struggling to decide on a place to go. There are so many options and we lack local knowledge. The simplest place to get to from where they are now (Bacolod) seems to be Sipalay, but it looks like a quiet place at the best of times and we're afraid that it will be absolutely dead at this time of year. Do you have any suggestions as to the best place to go now -- August -- where my son could swim in the sea and be sure of having people around to talk to?

Which beach resorts are open and fairly lively year round? I believe that at this time of year the eastern parts of the Philippines are less subject to bad weather. Any ideas would be appreciated.I would suggest posting your question on the relevant destination page of the Thorn Tree. I recently came across the following website. Level Contributor“” My family and I check-in at this hotel for 3 nights through Tripadvisor and found the rate so cheap. Location – 5 mins (via walk) away from the Jordan port (Guimaras). You can also see the view of Guimaras in the window. Just make sure to request a room with Guimaras view prior to your arrival. The hotel is also... Level Contributor“” Stayed in a Standard and Deluxe. Both rooms were great. What I appreciated most was the super comfy beds, not the hard ones I am used to in Asia. Bathrooms were clean and water pressure was great! The neighborhood is pretty convenient for seeing the downtown sites and catching a ferry to Guimaras (5-10 minute walk to the ferry), but...1Thank expat_in_hongkong Thank you for your encouraging comments and we look forward to seeing you again soon. It is close to the public market, the ferry, Robinsons, public jeepneys, the University of Iloilo, Ateneo, City Hall, San Jose Church.

It is in an area where I felt safe even in the evening. My room was clean and comfortable, and reasonably priced. Level Contributor“” The first room that we had was smelling like a urine and i requested to transfer and the next room was still smelly but tolerable. Good thing it was only one night stay b efore heading to Bacolod. They have small swimming pool. Level Contributor“” Circle inn strategically located in downtown Iloilo very near major malls like Robinson's and Gaisano..University of Iloilo and Sta.Maria church a few steps away..Ortiz wharf is just a minute walk..clean rooms with view of Guimaras island or facing the pool plus in-house restaurant are Circle Inn's value for money as well as helpful staff. “” I stayed in this hotel from Dec 18-19, 2016, front desk staff are helpful. However, internet connection especially in 2nd floor farther side of the floor is very weak and worst cannot be connected. As a travelling businessman, internet connection is very important to me to stay connected to my business around the globe.
