Or is it best to rent them? We will be on Maui for 12 days and plan to spend most of those days on the beach! If your staying at a condo they may already have them. If you need to buy them just go to a place like Kmart or Wallmart. Don't spend anymore than you need to and when your ready to go home just give them to someone else to use so they don't get thrown in the dump. You could go to Wal Mart, K mart or even Longs drugs to buy chairs and umbrella's. Be careful with the umbrella. They will go flying in just a little bit of wind. Sand generally won't weigh them down enough. You can also buy anchors at the above stores. You could get 2 chairs and an umbrella for well under 100.00. I think it's easier just to rent them but I would look at the cost differential. We found 4 perfectly good beach chairs at Savers, which seemed to me like a Value Village. Savers is just south of the K-Mart. They were priced at about $4 each - certainly less than the exact same new ones at the Longs Drugs.
At the end of our trip we took them back to the Savers store and dropped them just inside the front doors in their donations bin. Edited: 4:51 pm, December 19, 2011 If you are staying at a condo, I'd take Clint's advice and check out the contents...you never know. Once we found a nice boogie board in the closet...sweet! (If buying, I'd say Walmart or maybe Long's if they are closer to your resort and you don't want to pack them in the car before unloading, etc. We always check the condo cupboards, if they have them* great (they usually do) , if not, we buy and then leave in the condo when done. Perhaps caddyshackman found the boogie board we left last time, it was pink so would have suited his outfit :-) * where "them" = boogie boards, toys, chairs, coolers etc A costco membership just might pay for itself just for the time you are on Maui if staying in a condo. They have those Tommy Bahama backpack chairs for a great price and they seemed to be the most popular chair on the island when we were there last week.
I think the Tommy Bahama chairs are number one at the rental co's so probably why you saw so many. We gave up on beach umbrellas years ago...the same reason no one uses them in Seattle! They either fly away or turn inside out!! One destination mentioned in this post We asked several people where they got them and they all said Costco. Some also had Tommy Bahama umbrellas and they filled the carry bag with rocks on the beach to anchor the umbrella. Wish we could buy them here in California. We've even filled the bag with sand when we forgot our anchor!! Beach umbrellas are pretty useless in Maui. Wind is too strong. I haven't seen many people using them. Saw one blow away just a few weeks ago when we were there. 9 nights/ 2 hotels.
