Kylie here for part 2 of the Leesa to Casper mattress comparison. If you missed part 1, you can check it out here. If you are not looking for a long detailed post but would still like a rundown of the facts, check out a quick comparison video or look over the chart below. Justin and I ordered a Casper mattress and a Leesa mattress within an hour of one another on January 1st. We received the Casper on January 8th and the Leesa a day later on January 9th. January 10th: Unboxing Day! Both mattresses came compressed in comparable boxes, the Leesa box being slightly taller, narrower, and 2 pounds heavier: Justin unboxed the Casper while I unboxed the Leesa. Both mattresses were simple to break into with no assembly required. The Leesa arrived much more compressed than the Casper but quickly came to shape after being exposed to air. Check out the process for yourself in our unboxing and first impressions video. Although both mattresses appeared to take full shape extremely quickly, Justin and I gave them a little over an hour before actually lying on them.

While waiting it out, we explored a bit. According to the tags, the Casper was manufactured on 12/29/14 and the Leesa on 12/30/14. We also took advantage of this time to explore beneath the outer cover. Both covers are soft and simple to unzip revealing an inner cover before exposing the foam layers. The Casper’s inner cover is like a fitted bottom sheet as it covers the top and sides of the mattress, cupping around the bottom edges without covering the entire thing. See the bottom of the mattress in the photo below. The Leesa’s inner cover is sealed and encompasses the whole mattress. The following photo also shows the bottom of the mattress. The next observation we made, or shall I say Justin made as he is great with technical details, is the holes drilled into the top layer of the mattress. In comparison to the Casper, the Leesa has more holes which we suspect may be the reason that the Leesa is cooler to the touch and also when lying down than the Casper. Check out the foam layers of each mattress:

The Casper is made up of 7″ of dense base foam, 1.5″ of 4 pound high density memory foam, and 1.5″ of dunlop latex foam. The photo shows that the total foam height is roughly 9.25″. This measurement has not changed as of 1/22/15. 6″ of dense core support base foam, 2″ of contouring memory foam, and 2″ of cooling avena foam are layered together to create the Leesa. After unboxing, the mattress measured at 9″. As of 1/22/15, the mattress measures 9.5″. Both companies advertise that their top layer has cooling properties. As I listed above, Justin and I found the Leesa to be cooler than the Casper. The Casper is not at all hot as it also is cool to the touch but in comparison to the Leesa, the Casper is warmer. After lying on both mattresses, we concluded that the Casper is firmer than the Leesa. However, if you get scientific and compare the level of sinkage on each mattress, evidence suggests that the Casper is softer. Remember how I mentioned that my husband is good with the technical side of things?

Justin used a level, a 20 pound weight and each of our bodyweights to test the level of sinkage for each mattress. Check out the results below: These results lead us to believe that lighter people might not get the support they need out of the Leesa. That being said, we speculate that the Casper might be liked by a greater range of people. Justin and I believe that the Casper’s higher sink level is due to the slightly thinner and also softer top foam layer. Many people describe the Casper mattress to be cloud like and I would have to agree. The top cloud like layer of the Casper is supported by two firmer layers of foam. We believe that the Casper’s softer top layer allows lighter people to sink further into the Casper while cradling all of the body’s nooks and crannies such as the lower back. I would describe the experience as cloud like yet completely supportive. When reading reviews of both mattresses, Justin and I ran across some written by people who were off-put by the smell.

The Leesa originally had a slight coffee like smell and the Casper a latex smell. Neither smell was strong or offensive and both dissipated quickly, leaving us with no complaints in the olfactory department. Justin and I did a “collapse on the bed” test. If you would like to check it out, you can watch us during our unboxing video here. We discovered that the Casper has much less motion transfer than our old innerspring mattress. This is quite impressive with the way my husband can fling himself on the bed! Amazingly, the Leesa has even LESS motion transfer than the Casper. It may be hard to believe but I barely felt my 6 foot husband throw himself down right next to me. As you can see, the mattresses are very similar. It is hard to base a decision off of initial impressions so Justin and I are continuing to try out both mattresses and will be back with a final decision in a later post. Do you have experience with the Leesa or the Casper mattress? If so, what are your thoughts regarding the mattress?
