If you have an old padded table chair that has lost all of its comfort and fluff, but you just can't seem to part with it, consider replacing the padding in the seat. Over time foam padding breaks down, flattens and decomposes, making a chair almost unbearable to sit on. Rather than replacing the chair, especially if it's a sentimental heirloom or part of a matching set, install new foam.

Flip the chair upside down so the underside of the seat is facing toward you. Unscrew the threaded nails or bolts, using a screwdriver, that attach the seat to the chair frame. Generally, there are four screws, one on each corner. Lift the padded seat off the chair frame. Unstaple the upholstered fabric from the seat using a staple remover or a screwdriver. You may have to pry some of the staples loose with needle nose plyers to get beneath them with your staple remover. Place all of the used staples on a paper towel, so you don't lose them or step on them during the pulling process. Throw the staples away. Peel the upholstered fabric and deteriorated padding away from the flat chair seat. Don't throw the fabric away if you plan to reupholster the chair with the same material. Place the old foam padding on top of the new piece of padding. Trace around the edge of the old padding with colored chalk. The old piece of foam padding serves as a template for the new padding. Cut a piece of foam padding from the new padding that is slightly larger than the old piece.

Place it on the side of the chair seat that doesn't have staple indentations. Lay the new foam padding on a piece of batting. Cut the batting, approximately 2 inches wider than the foam, so it will wrap securely around the corners of the seat. Batting provides padding for the corners and adds another layer of cushion to the seat. Secure the old upholstered fabric to the chair with a staple gun, using staples similar in size to your original staples. Staple every 1 inch around the perimeter of the fabric about 1/2 inch from the edge. Pull the fabric tightly around the seat and new padding as you nail the staples to the wood or plywood surface. You may choose to install new fabric on the chair to update its appearance. If so, use the old fabric as a template. Fold the fabric under a round-corner seat to hide creases. This method creates folds under the seat where they can't be seen from the top of the seat. Staple the fabric on the underside to hold it in place. With square corners, The Family Handyman website recommends creasing the fabric and folding it like the corners of a gift-wrapped present.
