With a flexible back and rotating arms, the chair was designed to accommodate people whether they are using their computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. Tech blog engadget praised the chair for adjusting to support what it calls the “smartphone slump” while Gizmodo marveled at the way Gesture “caters to all the wacky poses we strike when using various devices.” The design reflects how Steelcase completely and fundamentally rethought performance seating, said Tim Elms, global product manager for Gesture. “Gesture is about the way we are interacting with technology,” Elms said. The design was inspired by a Steelcase study of more than 2,000 workers across 11 countries which discovered nine new postures that people have developed from using their mobile devices. Those postures from the "strunch" to the "smart lean" can make sitting in traditional office chairs uncomfortable since they were designed to hold people in one position: sitting straight up.
Gesture marks the first seating product that Steelcase has designed and engineered globally at the same time in all continents, Elms said. RELATED: Steelcase CEO shares his vision for future of the workplace The chair was designed to meet both the ergonomics and sustainability requirements around the globe which is challenging because different markets measure sustainability in different ways. France, for example, looks at the energy used to makes product while the U.S. standards are based on materials. The chair is designed so it can accommodate a range of different body types around the globe. Gesture can be adjusted with just four controls on the right side of the chair. “It’s about simplicity,” said Elms, adding that reducing complexity was a specific goal for the design team. The chair will retail for $750 to $850 when it becomes available starting this fall. Steelcase is still producing and selling its best-selling Leap chair as well, but says Gesture is a chair that works in traditional and informal work environments.
