Do It Yourself for Seats and CushionsIf you need a new mattress but don't have the resources to buy one, it would help to know how to make a mattress from foam. When you open a mattress case, you can see that expensive mattresses are often only layers of foam. It is something you can easily do for yourself with or without a mattress case. Step 1Measure your bed frame's width and length. The foam might come larger, but that is acceptable because you can cut it down to fit. Measure the height of the area where the mattress will go. Make sure that 14 inches of foam will fit. Step 2Buy two layers of memory foam. Get the solid foam and not the egg-crate pattern. If this mattress is for a lightweight person, one layer might be plenty. Step 3Buy one layer of extra-firm foam. If you have a deep space, you can use two layers. It is a firm support and gives enough of a base for the memory foam on top. Step 4Allow the foam to uncurl and relax for several hours before putting it on the bed.

Give the room plenty of ventilation to air out the smell of the foam. Step 5Prepare the base by placing a solid piece of plywood on the base of your bed frame. If you are using a box mattress, you can skip this step. Half-inch thickness is usually plenty, but if this is a large bed, a 3/4-inch base might be more suitable. Step 6Remove the mattress cover from your previous mattress. Unzip the cover and lay it on the plywood base or box mattress. Insert the firm foam and then the memory foam. If you don't have a mattress cover, cover the layers of foam with a fitted sheet. We offer ten densities of foam mattresses to choose from. Prices start dirt cheap, up to rigid, long lasting (20 years) foams. Our EconoFlex foam grade is used in the manufacturing of 90% of all sofas—we don't recommend this grade except for applications that don't get used a lot. Take time to read the descriptions of our foam, below. These descriptions are presented again at the bottom of the price quote page, for your convenience.

Keep in mind that thinner foam is softer and thicker foam is firmer than the descriptions given. Choose dimensions for a price quote... Your weight will affect the foam's firmness. We have many more foam qualities than listed here. Contact us for more information. Diamond Quilted Caseon a Foam Mattress Foam Mattress withWhite Fabric Cover A soft foam, ideal for seat cushions when you want a little more support. Good for foam thicknesses 2" to 5" (5–13 cm). When thicker than 5" it starts to feel more medium-firm, but you may want this. (Density: 2.8 lbs/ft3, ILD: 24.) We recommend this very high quality foam for any cushion or mattress. V34 is not recommended for seat cushions 3" (8 cm) or thinner since you will bottom out—use the firmer foams.

We strongly recommend you buy a custom cover to protect any foam of this quality from rips and stains. It is a very good foam. Engineered using a high resilience (HR) cell structure. (Density: 2.6 lbs/ft3, ILD: 34.) This is one of the best pieces of poly urethane foam and will give you many years of support. It is recommended for seat cushions or mattresses. This foam is too firm for back cushions. (Density: 2.8 lbs/ft3, ILD: 44.) EverFlex™ V54 is a high quality firm grade of foam. This foam is one of the best qualities. It is great for a seat cushion or firm mattress, but too firm for back cushions. If your weight is 200–230 pounds (91–105 kg), then this foam is appropriate for a firm cushion 5" (13 cm) or thicker. (Density: 2.9 lbs/ft3, ILD: 54.) Rebond is our most durable foam. In most applications it won't soften or dip with time. This very firm, high-density foam is perfect for applications that get a lot of use and compression, such as motorcycle seats, gym equipment, and high-use benches.

It should be used with V54 foam glued on top for cushions to mitigate its firmness, or be used with 4" memory foam for mattresses for very heavy individuals. Thicker applications, such as a 4"-thick cushion, should be made from 2" of V54 glued on top of 2" of Rebond foam. Since this foam is so dense it has very little give. DuraFlex™ D30 foam is a very good foam. We recommend it for mattresses, window seats, and seat or back cushions. (Density: 2.5 lbs/ft3, ILD: 30.) This foam is a very good foam. We recommend it for mattresses, window seats, and seat cushions. (Density: 2.5 lbs/ft3, ILD: 40.)(Density: 2.5 lbs/ft3, ILD: 50.)It is an inexpensive grade and good for any application. We recommend it for cushions on a couch, guest beds, window seats, or for really thick seat cushions. This quality is commonly found in all new furniture. It will soften with use so perhaps start with the C55 foam. EconoFlex™ C33 is not recommended for seat cushions 2" (5 cm) or thinner since you will bottom out—use the DuraFlex™ foam or firmer foams.

(Density: 1.8 lbs/ft3, ILD: 36.) EconoFlex™ C55 Very Firm EconoFlex™ C55 is a firm to very firm foam. It is also inexpensive. It is fine for a guest bed, window seat, or firm seat cushion in a sofa that is not used regularly. Regular use will break down this foam and its firmness will feel more "medium" with time. It is great for 1", 2", and 3" (3–8 cm) thick applications since it won't easily bottom out. (Density: 1.8 lbs/ft3, ILD: 55.) A lightweight foam perfect for applications that will not be compressed very often. This inexpensive foam will soften and may deform from being compression packaged when shipped. It takes 1–2 weeks to fully uncompress. It comes in a light grayish-white or dark gray color. (Density: 1.2 lbs/ft3, ILD: 36.)
