Lego enthusiasts have conventions, smaller meetups, and design contests; such contests feature original figures and other items created from scratch. Some of the most fun possible in playing with Legos involves Lego trains. The first Lego trains appeared in set 080 in 1966 and were simply push-along. The tracks were blue, and later that same year, set 115 debuted and included the first Lego train motor, a 4.5-volt, battery-operated model. Three years later, beginning with set 720, certain motorized Lego trains had 12-volt, DC power supplies. All three models used the same gauge in 1972 and had the same, nifty, blue tracks. Even the push-along models came with a dummy engine that looked the same as the powered versions. In 1980, Lego overhauled its whole train line and exchanged the blue tracks for gray, added more features to the 12-volt transformer, and built electric attachments into its dioramas, including lamp posts and lit train interiors.
After 1980, there were various incarnations and experiments in the power used by Lego trains, including 9-volt systems and problems with compatibility, but everything was standardized in 2009 with the advent of the "Power Functions" system and flexible track. From push-along models to remote control versions from the mid-2000s to today's standardized trains, there is something for everyone. Lego train enthusiasts are encouraged to ensure the compatibility of their items. They should check track gauge, motor or transformer power, and power-delivery options. For example, some engines get their power from metal "third rails" embedded in the track, and others just use batteries. With all the compatibility issues Lego experienced with their 9-volt trains and remote control models, it's good news that most of the unpowered train cars are compatible with almost all sets and are virtually interchangeable. Aside from engine-mounted batteries, such as the 4.5-volt and remote controlled trains, there are two basic types of Lego power transformers: 12-volt and 9-volt.

To collect vintage Lego trains, enthusiasts should expect the cost to be much higher.
