We picked this one cause we sidecar it to our bed and since it's edges are flat unlike the trendier rounder edges this one allows it to be flushed against our bed. However, we have it set as a toddler bed and I wish the manual would have recognized that setting because my husband was freaking out thinking it wasn't meant to be that way. This crib is everything I expected it to be. The color is perfect and the quality superb. VERY simple to assemble, it took my husband and I an hour at most. The box we received it in was pretty beat up, but there was only one scratch on the wood.
Thankfully it is on the back of the crib which is hidden. I had read another review saying that the photo is misleading about having a skirt and drawer on the crib at the same time, and this is possible. The amount of skirt that is seen from the front would just depend on the height of the spring piece on which the mattress lays. I think it is a wonderful crib, especially for the price. I would recommend this to friends, and already have! Let me begin by saying that as a carpenter it really hurt my pride to shop around for a crib for my son. My wife and I just moved into a new house and between the move, remodeling our old house to sell, and a full time job I simply didn't have the time to build nursery furniture before the baby was due. That being said, my standards are high. Setting the bar high in terms of quality pushes a nursery budget over $1k very, very easily. We tried to justify the extra cost by looking at convertible cribs that would convert from crib to toddler bed to full-size bed and eventually to guest bed in another room.
My wife and I had a fit of frugality and decided we were going to buy the best crib we could without spending a lot of money and spent hours researching online. We kept coming back to this crib and eventually purchased it. Shipping was delayed a bit but after apparently serving as a trampoline for UPS employees (box was mangled) it arrived. I took quite a few pictures of the unopened box and of the unboxing in case there was any damage to the crib. The only damage was to a piece that faced the floor so I wasn't too tore up about it. My nine year old daughter read the directions off as I put it together and it went together in about an hour. Assembly is not difficult. I would recommend taking care with the pieces during assembly so you do not scratch the wood as it is a soft wood. We were careful and did not have a problem. Hopefully our boy doesn't channel the Great Beaver Spirit and chew on the wood too much or it will show the damage. I'm told you can purchase covers for the top of the rail and they are safe to have on your crib (just a cover for the top so it isn't a suffocation hazard.)
This crib is much sturdier than I expected for the price point. It does convert to a toddler bed but I know the boy will be demanding I build him a bed like the one I made his sister so I doubt we'll need to use it for more than 4-5 years. NOTE: It DOES include the TODDLER rail unlike some other convertible cribs but it does not include the FULL-size rail kit. We purchased the DaVinci Piedmont Changer Chest to serve as storage. It is of the same quality as the crib which is better than expected but not expected to last very long. There is also a pull-out drawer under the crib where you can store light items (burp rags, crib mattress sheets, nothing too heavy or the bottom will bust.) All in all, I'm satisfied with the purchase. For under $500 we were able to secure a crib, crib mattress, and changer/dresser combo. They're better quality than I expected and will last plenty long enough for me to build the heirloom-quality furniture Dads want for their kids.It took forever for my husband and I to put it together because the directions were not clear.
