JOHN BAUSERT'S family has been in the chair-caning business since 1899. His store, Veterans Caning Shop in Manhattan, does both hand caning and machine caning. So does Jack Hubsmith of York End Antiques and Caning, who has been in the caning business for 10 years. He calls himself ''the new kid on the block.'' The material used in hand caning, the outer strips of the rattan plant, is inexpensive, but putting it on chairs by hand is hard work, Mr. Hubsmith said. This makes hand caning at least three times as expensive as machine caning. Machine caning uses pre-woven sheets of cane, which cost more but are easier to install. At Veterans, machine caning a side chair costs $20 to $26 and takes a week; hand caning the same chair would cost $75 to $125 and take three to five weeks. York End Antiques and Caning takes two days to recane a chair by machine; hand caning can take a month. Machine caning at York End costs $25 to $30, and hand caning is $80 to $120. Both stores repair the rest of the chair, as well.
''If you spend a lot of money putting hand caning in a chair, and the chair is falling apart, you're cuckoo not to fix it,'' Mr. Hubsmith said. Regluing charges at York End and at Veterans start at $25. To care for the caning on a chair, Mr. Bausert recommended wetting the bottom of the seat and the back of the chair with warm water once a month. Let the chair sit, unused, 12 hours. This is especially necessary in the winter, when heat dries the material. Mr. Bausert and Mr. Hubsmith also advised owners of cane chairs to treat them with care. ''Cane chairs are meant for sitting, not as a step stool,'' Mr. Hubsmith said. York End Antiques and Caning, 1388 Lexington Avenue (between 91st and 92d Streets), does not charge for pickup or delivery. If necessary, the store will lend a customer a chair to use in the meantime. Veterans Caning Shop, 550 West 35th Street, also repairs rush, splint, rattan and fine-quality wicker. The store charges $2.50 for pickup and delivery. Yorkville Caning Company, 31-04 60th Street, near Northern Boulevard in Woodside, Queens, has been in the chair caning business for over 70 years, said William Feuer, the vice president.
