Just wondering if anyone has any advice of purchasing chairs/umbrellas. I'm thinking about buying some before I come, but checking on prices and they seem pretty high to me. What is the going rate, or do most of the condos rent them or what? Is there a good place to buy them when we get to GS? We are staying at Island Tower is that matters. As you would imagine, all the stores down here sell that kind of stuff from Wal Mart to CVS pharmacy. A good rental company is Ike's Beach Service. We buy the cheap chairs at wal-mart,,,$5.00 to $20.00 a piece.. You will love the Island tower,,,
My favorite of all places I have stayed.. property's lost and found/housekeeping/janitorial staff Bamanascar is politely telling you to check the dumpsters!!!! I had exactly the same problem. Tried to find some online within a reasonable price, but they all started at least $35.00 and up per chair plus shipping costs. My husband suggested that we try Academy, a sports store, and found beach chairs for $9.99 a piece. I also found a beach 6 ft. umbrella at my local dollar store for $9.99. If you don't have an Academy locally, check your nearest sports/camping store. Buy once and save the money from renting! The Wal Mart in GS seems to be very reasonably priced and last year they had a variety of chairs. Our umbrella (from wal mart) is still in good shape after about 10 trips, and we just replaced the chairs last year. Heck, I think it is at least $25 a day to rent a chair on the beach. You'll come out way ahead buying your own. I think we got two cushioned lounges with an umbrella for about $125/wk if I remember right.
We rent from Ike too. This disadvantage of having your own - is the set up & taking down. Chairs & umbrella's get heavier walking on the sand. And also if you don't set your umbrella up correctly - the wind can take it away. We actually 2 umbrella's blowing down the beach - which can also be very dangerous. But it can be so much fun to watch,,Just kidding Do know the rentals are taken down ever day , and sometimes the sun is still strong, and it can be a bit late in the morning, before they get them out . Just not a fan of it,,, You have to sit close to other people,,, Like a foot or two... They gave us the name of Ike's but I was wondering if anyone knew of any other places to rent chairs and umbrellas so I could compare prices. I don't know if they are the only company, but I always rent from Ike's and have never been disappointed. They are always very accomadating. And to me that's worth it. As a matter of fact, I tip whom ever my "cabanna boy" is for the day, at the end of each day. Unless they tell me up front that I will have the same one the whole time, then I tip him on the last day. IT would be cheaper. To buy chairs and umbrellas at wal-mart in gulf shores, You can just throw them away , chair rental runs $25.00 a day plus tip and they take them down early, leaving you with no chairs. I just think it's worth it. If you want partial shade, or full shade, or even full sun..."cabanna boy" he repositions your umbrella as many time as you want. AND he knows how to do it so the umbrella doesn't blow away and kill some body. I guess it all depends on if you want to spend money on a service, or to Do the umbrellas your self, I can do the umbrellas my self...
So I would rather spend money on other things...I called Ike's and found out that 2 chairs/1 umbrella for 6 days is $100. Gulf Coast Beach Rental is about the same - $96 so roughly $50 per person before tip. Not sure of the quality of the chairs and umbrellas at Wal-mart or if they'll fit in our rental car but will check it out. FYI On the Beach rentals, Something to consider The service will NOT put the chairs and umbrella where YOU want. They line them up next to each other in rows and NOT close to the water, So if you want to be aways from everyone else for a while or sit W/ your feet in the water, (which I prefer) you are out of luck. We are skipping GS this year and going to FT Walton, our condo comes W/ beach service, But I still will take my own. Also since you are renting a house you may not have an Cabanna Boy there to move them around for you ,And you may have to wait every morning for them to be delivered if this is the case they will also be picked up BEFORE dark, so you may not have them after dinner.
Unless they let you have them for the week.Then set up is up to you. Call Meyer and see if there are any already @ the house they may be there for you to use. That was what I was trying to say, They take the chairs down by about 5 or so.... And there is so much more beach to enjoy after that.. And we buy the chairs that fit into bags, and wal-mart sells 7 1/2 foot umbrellas that work perfect for two or more... You can even buy a cheap beach tent that works for all, But be warned , don't set it up as tall as it can go, or the wind will take it away.... We just returned last night and we stayed at Martinique and Ike's was at the beach providing their beach rental services....It was $100 for Sunday-Friday for 2 chairs and umbrella....the attendant was amazingly helpful and always asking us if she could adjust the umbrella for us to provide shade for our 3 little ones.....We stayed at the Beach Club last year and Ike's was there also...same price and service......
