Home / Latest from NI / Sci–fi interiors, X–box rooms & gaming chairs – Cayan expands Belfast HQ Next in Latest from NI BBC SPOTY lights up Belfast Dublin has long been a favourite destination for some of the world’s biggest technology firms – Google, Facebook, Twitter… the big guns! It’s easy for them to do business there. For a start, it costs a lot less – businesses in the Republic pay 12.5% corporation tax. In Germany it’s 30%, in Northern Ireland it’s 20%. While it’s not the only reason companies are there, its certainly a major factor. Northern Ireland may not be able to compete when it comes to corporation tax, it has still managed to attract growing numbers of global tech firms.Familiar names like Fujitsu, Microsoft and Openwave have all set up here. More than 100 others have joined them – and for good reason. This is down to a number of factors – the right work force, cheaper operating costs and government support.Take Boston tech–firm Cayan who came to Northern Ireland in 2013.

They specialise in online payment systems and currently employ 134 people in Belfast. Last week Cayan announced a further £3m investment and 50 new jobs. Now, they could’ve chosen to expand their European operations elsewhere– but they didn’t. Instead they re–invested in a place that specialises in IT, technology and software development. They re–invested in a place that developed a product that been central to the company’s recent growth.Sales of these terminals have grown by 35% on a quarter–by–quarter basis since the launch in 2013. The company’s clients are primarily US–based and include leading brands such as Puma and Harley Davidson. As Cayan’s NI operations grow so will their Belfast HQ. They’re set to move into Belfast’s City Quay One development alongside global law firm, Baker Mackenzie. Cayan will transform the interiors of their new Belfast offices with a sci–fi theme complete with an x–box room with kitted out with gaming chairs.

If employees get bored with that they could always just look out the window… While Cayan and the majority of the 900–plus ICT companies in Northern Ireland may not have the same profile as Facebook or Google, it’s fair to say our tech sector is thriving. With Northern Ireland’s corporation tax set to drop from 20%–12.5% in line with the south by 2018, things could be about to get even better here. Know someone looking for a tech job?
