In these lets face it fairly bleak looking times when the world is torn apart by terrorism, threats of environmental disaster and a 24/7 news cycle that throws up something new for us to worry about on an almost daily basis, it is hard not to just throw your hands up in frustration claiming a solution is beyond our means and that we are all inevitably doomed. What Floris van Den Berg does in this concise but informative tome is attempt to offer ethical solutions for our global maladies pointing out very precisely that our thinking lies at the heart of the solution to all of human kinds problems more specifically if we practice a form of empathetic thinking which he terms Universal Subjectivism we can quite easily broach just about any form of dilemma or suffering. Not to give too much away about this approach but suffice it to say the solution and his examplars are fiendishly simple in understanding but more confronting in application. His call to veganism as the only ethical form of energy consumption represents some of the strongest and most logical arguments I have ever heard in favor of the practice yet equally he does not offer us half measure solutions stating that half measures essentially just get us to an unwanted end point more slowly. Similar exercises in empathy drawing heavily on the philosophy of people like John Rawls and Peter Singer offer similar examples in which the ethical choice is made candidly clear by focussing on an issue, say womans rights under secular religion, and asking of us how we would redress the balance if we were to find ourselves in their shoes. Each time the solution, along with our tendency to take the path of least confrontation with regards said issues, is made clear and in doing so we can plot our own course towards a more ethical life. As someone who has a huge interest in ethical living, if not a huge application of said ideals, it was a wake up call for me to confront the innate hypocrisy of my own choices as well as offering a long term solution to confronting wider ethical dilemmas on a daily basis. Have no doubt this is a defining book, sadly one whose hour has not come as yet, but one which I am sure we will look back on in the same way that environmentalists now look back on Silent Spring as a rallying call for a moment whose time must come if we are to survive. I would highly recommend it to anyone who seeks to live a more ethical life and who shares a concern about the direction human kind and the planet seem to be taking as it offers an almost infallible method to broach just about any subject from a humanist and ethical way.
