2.5I liked that the inside covering was black; it went well with the mainly orange cover. When I read the summary and all the descriptive words like shaky and quaky and jittery I got a little worried, because I don’t like a lot of adjectives like that.The witch looked cuter on the cover of the book. She looked a little crazy with big eyes and only two front teeth, with a large gap between. I didn’t understand why the crow and the bat looked so angry as she’s opening the mailbox. The first page they looked startled or something, definitely not mean. I don’t know if it’s because they weren’t invited or they don’t like her, or what, but it made no sense to me for them to be mad. I thought the rhyming was pretty bad. The Witches’ Wobble, a Halloween festivitiy where witches go to gobble.” I wish their party had a better name. It quickly became apparent that a lot of the words were too big for a children’s book. I don’t know that they would all know what a buffet is, unless they’re older children and they definitely wouldn’t know what a filet is. I don’t think they would know what a thicket is either, and I think the teacher or parent would have to take a lot of time to stop and explain what words meant which would break the flow of reading. I did like the line “She raced along the back roads to dodge a speeding ticket.” I thought that was a really cute and clever idea.The word hailed and encountered would go right over kids’ heads I think. It was cute how the end of the broomstick flew up when they had to make a sudden stop when the pumpkin yelled at them. And the witch’s face as she looked back at the skeleton and pumpkin on her broom was cute; she had her hand to her mouth. The words collapse and hearthside are probably not known to kids either. I liked the idea that the mummy forgot his wraps and was cold. And the line “Please wait for me! I’ll go batty when the sexton bongs the bells in my belfry.” It’s a great line for adults, it rhymes and it’s clever, but kids couldn’t follow it. It’s a fatal error when authors use expanded vocabulary when they’re writing for kids. I’ll never understand that, because you have to write for your audience.I liked the idea that 7 different Halloween creatures are trying to fit onto a broom together. It was cute to see them all on the broomstick in one place. They end up falling because the broomstick breaks, which I actually didn’t see coming. I liked the face of the pumpkin; his eyes were wide open when it happened, and afterward they all look dismayed. The pumpkin is sending a disgruntled look over, and the mummy has a long face. It was cute how the ghost had his hand to his head, and the skeleton’s head had come off.It was disappointing that they arrived to the party too late, because I was scanning the page to see the clever meals I expected. But there was only an apple, and one finger sandwich. The food had already been eaten. The menu is where the author really lost it. It’s like they forget they’re writing for kids and they’re clearly writing what they know, which you can’t use your own vocabulary when writing for kids. “Eye of newt, sautéed slug, pickleworm pate, spiderweb soufflé, and zilch. They’re going to have no idea what any of this is!They all looked so cute with their happy, smiling faces as they left the party and went out trick-or-treating. They had a party at the human’s house, and it was kind of disappointing. They had taffy apples and candy corn to eat, with chips and muffins on the table, and a bowl of round, colorful something or other that I couldn’t identify, and they had purple punch. I expected better treats, and someone listed all of these treats and said they hadn’t anything as tasty since they were six years old, but the author didn’t even say who was talking! The mummy said something, and then the hostess told them to eat hearty, and then the character says those lines, but it wasn’t clear who was speaking. That’s a major problem! I scanned them all trying to figure out who it applied to, but that didnt help.It was cute that she swapped her broom out for a mop, while it was in the shop. I expected clever Halloween details, so I looked closely at all of the illustrations, but the food was normal, no Halloween treats made to look like monsters or anything like that. The profile portrait in the humans house could have been an opportunity to do something unusual, but it was just an old womans face. It was lacking in cute details where the illustrator had an opportunity to add some Halloween touches.They were all cute together on the mop, because there was room for everyone. It was weird how she dreamed of cakes and lemonade, two things that have nothing to do with Halloween whatsoever. I know she said it to rhyme with friendships she had made, but it didnt fit. And it was strange how theyre all in bed together. Its nice that she thought the friendships she had made were sweeter than treats, but that didnt mean they had to pile into bed together and share a bed. They could have shared a house at most, or she could have simply envisioned her new friends in her mind. All in all, a cute book that was worth reading.
