Ursprünglich war Science Fiction das Metier der Literatur. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts im Umfeld von Jules Verne und (später) H.G. Wells entstanden, war seit jeher die Verbildlichung einer zunächst technikfreundlichen, im Verlauf der Science-Fiction-Geschichte aber immer wieder auch technikkritischen Utopie vorrangiges Ziel der Autoren: Diese sollte vor den Augen der staunenden Leser quasi auferstehen. Kein Wunder also, dass sich das junge visuelle Medium des Films schnell des Genres bemächtigte, nicht selten mit psychologischem Impuls. Riesige Vogelspinnen reflektierten die Angst vor dem Atomschlag, Körperfresser projizierten die US-amerikanische Furcht vor Invasoren und Spionen während des Kalten Kriegs zum Zweck voller Kinokassen gekonnt ins All. In 116 Artikeln widmet sich der vorliegende Band dem Genre und seiner wechselvollen Historie. Herausgeber Thomas Koebner und seine Autoren freilich fassen den Begriff der Science Fiction äußerst weit. So kommt es, dass auch ein werbeästhetisch zugegeben brillanter Film wie Delicatessen in den Bestand mit aufgenommen wurde, weil sein skurriles Mietshaus mitsamt dessen merkwürdigen Bewohnern irgendwo in einer nicht näher definierten Endzeit -- vielleicht nach einem Nuklearschlag? -- spielt. Dann aber dürfte auch Samuel Becketts Endspiel mit Fug und Recht Science Fiction genannt werden. Egal: Was dieser Band der Reclam-Reihe Filmgenres von Die Reise zum Mond oder Metropolis über Die Fliege und Fahrenheit 451 bis hin zu Brazil, Terminator (zumindest Teil eins und zwei) und Matrix (zumindest Teil eins) an Klassikern des Genres aufzufahren hat und in klugen Texten bespricht, ist aller Achtung wert.
