Deceptive Diagnosis: When Sin Is Called Sickness, by David M. Tyler is very, very typical and disheartening. As a Christian as well as someone who suffers from PTSD/CPTSD stemming from an abusive marriage of over 2 decades, as well as depression & anxiety and being disabled at an early age....i am saddened to see this be a 5 star choice view of Christian counselors, but not surprised. mental health already has such a stigma to it that very few reach out for help, and many of those that do simply retreat back into hiding hoping & praying no one will know the truth of their suffering because they were labeled as weak Christians, of little faith, etc. Sure, sin put sickness and death into our lives, but to say that our ONLY help and resource is by faith, through prayer, and by following a formula in the Bible??I Believe in the Word, believe it to be THE word of God as told to man by Himself directly (all scripture is God-breathed), i Believe the Lord is my Savior and the one and only true God, the Way, the Truth and the light...but to say illness is is simply sin is ridiculous, and i think, unfair to God. Should we then deny diabetics life-preserving insulin because they are weak in faith? Should someone with Meningitis forgo antibiotic treatment and just pray? No...God equipped many with the gift of knowledge, intelligence, creativity, desire to help others, curiosity..these people went on to make great strides in the field of Medicine. Without vaccinations, without doctors, without simple Penicillin, without water treatment, without so many things we would still have an in credibly short life span...many of us would not even be here because our ancestors would have succumbed from some malady prior to bringing our lineage to fruition (yes, the miracle of life, a gift from God - should we forgo pre-natal care as well?)Can faith move mountains...definitely... with faith the size of a mustard seed you can say to that tree or mountain move from here to there...i have great faith...why else stay in an abusive marriage for 24 years?? But to deny someone treatment for something just because it is associated with the mind (the heart then?); deny someone a better life, a better relationship with their God because they suffer from mental illness is obscene. I wonder how many of you would actually choose to deny treatment to your children? Your selves even?Yes, there are quake and impostors out there, bad apples if you will, just as in EVERY profession (even in the church), but lets focus more on the greatest & most important scripture of all...to Love the Lord your God with all your heart, your mind, your body, your soul...more importantly to Love one another more than yourselves. Its about Love. The mind is the LEAST understood part of human anatomy & physiology - but weve come a long way from drilling Burr holes into ones skull to help with depression (you know, so the evil & demons could escape), oh, wait...i guess we HAVENT come far from that..not if we revert hundreds of years and accept Mr. Tylers assertion that with faith (be a better Christian and ta-da, your illness is cured) mental illness will be cured.This just is NOT true...there are brain imaging studies, physiological biomarkers, et al that PROVE - without a doubt - that mental illness is a very real HEALTH matter that requires treatment; be that treatment medication, counseling, combinations of therapies ...whatever, to help that person heal.There is no greater pain than being shunned by your Church, turned away with the label that you are just not that good at being a Christian....trust me...i know, and i have endured a great many things many people could not.I also have a 20 yr career in Nursing, a Bachelors in Science...and i am not one to just take information at face value and run with it...i investigate claims, i research to make sure the information we so flippantly gather and pass around in this the 21st century/the information age is fact and if not find out what the actual truths are and help to educate my fellow humans - so we can ALL make better, factually informed decisions . I sent to this author in a FB group direct links to studies supporting/identifying actual, real live, factual, undeniable brain changes (not just chemical) in those who have been diagnosed with a variety of mental illnesses...i hope that one day though prayer, Mr. Tyler will allow himself to see the facts of mental illness and that we cannot just pray it away...God forbid he himself have to suffer through something like that.
