Thank you to our fundersThrough our Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP), a national program of the Canadian Red Cross, we’re providing health equipment to individuals dealing with illness or injury. Thanks to donors, local funders and partners; and with the support of dedicated volunteers and staff, our Health Equipment Loan Programs empower thousands of people each year to live more independently. HELP also plays an important role in the diversion of used equipment otherwise destined for landfill. HELP operates in the provinces of B.C., Alberta, New Brunswick, PEI, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as the Yukon territory. Our Short Term Loan Program alleviates the pressures that come along with injury or illness; assists seniors with mobility issues, allows people to return home from hospital earlier, and supports those in palliative care who wish to spend their final days in the comfort of their own home. Over-sized wheels on beach-ready wheelchairs make it easier to travel across the sand. 2 beach wheelchairs are available to use at any of 12 Vancouver beaches.
In general, one wheelchair is located at Jericho Beach and another at English Bay Beach. A wheelchair path kit is a plastic pathway that you can lay down on the sand to make it easier to roll a wheelchair or other wheeled device. Reserve a beach wheelchair or path kit If you would like to use either the beach wheelchairs or the path kits, phone 604-738-8535 to make sure we have the equipment available. Call several days before you need the equipment to ensure the equipment is ready for you.Vancouver is an enlightened city with excellent information and facilities for people with disabilities. Most buildings, public transportation and visitor attractions are accessible. Buses are equipped with ramps for wheelchairs and the SkyTrain and SeaBus are also accessible. If you’re driving a car, the city has increased the number of parking places for people with disabilities. If you have a disabled parking permit, it is valid in Vancouver. If you’re flying to Vancouver, accessible taxis are available from Vancouver Taxi to take you from the airport to your destination.
The Canada Line light rail service between the airport and downtown Vancouver is also wheelchair accessible. All public buses from the airport are wheelchair accessible. Take the bus from the airport to Airport Station and transfer to the #98 bus for downtown.
