Josh Nicholson, 20, at the Suncoast Spinners Australian squad development camp at Caloundra.

Dozens of up-and-coming wheelchair basketball stars shed blood, sweat and tears on the Sunshine Coast this week.Suncoast Spinners Wheelchair Basketball Club brought together the Australian development team and the Australian Gliders women's team for a camp in the lead up to the club's annual tournament, which attracts nearly 150 players from around the country. Players from the ages of 11 to 22 learnt skills, drills and tactics at the week-long camp. Some of Australia's most talented disabled young athletes were on show.Player Josh Nicholson, 20, lost his legs and forearms from meningococcal as a 16-month-old. The architecture student was defiant about his disability when he eagerly joined the Australian under-23 squad this week. "I can pretty much do everything the others can do," he said. Australian Gliders women's wheelchair basketball team hosted a handful of junior players from around Australia. Wheelchair basketball players are classified from 1.0 to 4.5 depending on their ability.

Some are paraplegics, some have lost limbs, while others are former able-body athletes with chronic leg and ankle injuries.A wheelchair basketball team must only have a total of 14 points or less of players on court at any time. Jaylen Brown, 11, is the youngest and one of the most talented players in the squad. Jake Fulwood, 20, has travelled to Dubai with the under-23 Australian team and hoped to go to Toronto for the 2018 world championships. He has a high classification, meaning he is more mobile than others. "I have to get under that basket and shoot that ball," he said. The young players learnt skills, drills and tactics at the week-long development camp, where there was no lack of clashes, falls and shoulder pain from muscle fatigue. Isobel Martin, 16, from Melbourne went down while training with the senior women. She was not hurt. Brisbane's Jaylen Brown, 11, may have been the youngest player in the squad, but he held his own. "Some teams just want to foul me and some teams are nice," he said.

Jaylen was born with proximal femoral focal deficiency, a deformation of the hip, and has been playing for seven years. "You don't treat him differently, because he's got enough talent he's just going to beat you," a fellow teammate said.Woombye's Ashley Wardman was just as determined as Jaylen on her first development camp. Her broken finger did not stop her training with the Australian senior women's wheelchair basketball team for the week. Ashley Wardman's broken finger has not deterred her from training with the Australian Gliders for the first time. Steven Elliot, 20, from Gympie suffers from transverse myelitis, where his immune system attacked his spinal chord, but he still stood at about 190 centimetres tall when out of his wheelchair. He treated the sport as a professional athlete would any sport."I found wheelchair basketball after I got my disease and I haven't looked for another sport since," he said."I go to the gym at least six days a week and I'm on court at least four days a week."
