Want to support Wizzybugs? The fun and innovative powered wheelchair designed specifically for children under five. Even those as young as 14 months can operate its simple controls, allowing them to zip around with their peers, developing spatial awareness, social interaction and independence. It can be used indoors and out of doors in accessible areas such as level gardens, playgrounds and parks, enabling children to enjoy the experience of mobility with their “first wheels”. The Wizzybug addresses the needs of children with conditions such as cerebral palsy, spinal muscular atrophy, spina bifida and muscular dystrophy. We build Wizzybugs onsite in Bath using locally sourced components. We would not be able to loan Wizzybugs for free without your support. Watch Wizzy and Daisy's Day To find out more about the benefits of Wizzybug, read Daisy’s story Loan a Wizzybug for FREE Generally there is no NHS funding for powered mobility for children under 5 so we fundraise to make Wizzybugs available, FREE of charge, to children in the British Isles (excluding Northern Ireland) who could benefit from them.

At present we are working towards providing the loan scheme in Northern Ireland. Thanks to the amazing generosity of our funders we have been able to provide over 300 families with Wizzybugs so far. Through the scheme, a child can have a Wizzybug for as long as they can benefit (this is usually until they outgrow it) and when they have completed their loan, they return their Wizzybug and we refurbish it for another child. If you would like to apply to the scheme Please contact our Children’s Occupational Therapy team on 01225 824103, who will help you decide whether the Wizzybug might be beneficial for your child. If it looks likely that the Wizzybug will be suitable we will send you a request form to complete with your referring therapist. For full details of the application process, please read our Wizzybug Loan Scheme Information Sheet. The original buggy was created in the early 1990s in close partnership with the Children’s Centre at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. The buggy’s design was driven by the same mission that the current Wizzybug follows: fun, independent mobility for young children.

We manufactured and sold 125 of the original BIME Junior buggies but eventually the moulds used to produce the buggy required a substantial investment to replace them and this presented us with an opportunity to review the design. In 2003, we therefore carried out a comprehensive survey with the families of the children who had used the buggy to find out their views and how they felt it could be improved. The responses covered topics such as the seating position, moving and handling issues, switches, general operation and accessories. Working in partnership with the charity Whizz-Kidz, we also contacted a number of occupational therapists to find out what they felt were the key requirements for a powered vehicle for children under five. This included appearance, seating, moving and handling, options for batteries and how therapists have used or would use a training vehicle. All these factors were taken into account as we worked to perfect the new design. The result was the new and improved version of the buggy which we called the Wizzybug, launched in 2007.
