My kids were supposed to be in the car with me. Thank God they weren’t. “An 18-year-old who was texting got on I-694 at Century Avenue, crossed three lanes and hit my Expedition. “I flipped end over end, landed and then was hit by a semi, which crushed the vehicle. Somehow, though, I landed on my wheels. “I was full of adrenaline, thinking the vehicle was about to go up in flames, so I kicked open the door and ran, even though the crash had blown my shoes off and I was bloody from the shattered glass.”

It was a miracle that Holerud survived the crash, but surviving has not been easy. “My knees were crushed, my heel was dislocated and my brain was bleeding in three places,” Holerud says. The aftermath of the traumatic brain injury left Holerud with persistent headaches, hearing problems and insomnia. She lives with chronic pain. As her quality of life decreased, her weight increased. “I was 80 pounds heavier,” Holerud says. I’d never been overweight before. I’d never been a gym person, but I loved riding my bike. “But, after the accident, I wasn’t sleeping more than three hours at a time. I was in a lot of pain but didn’t want to take pain medication long term. It was a vicious cycle. Holerud continued to see her doctors, but she looked elsewhere to lose weight. “I tried Weight Watchers, I tried NutriSystem, I tried LA Weight Loss, I tried Jenny Craig,” Holerud says. “I’d have some success, then stop. It just didn’t work for me;

I needed more support.” She found that support through the HealthEast Stillwater Clinic Weight Loss Program — a medically supervised way to lose pounds. “I see a doctor, I work with a nutritionist, I have access to online help, I go in monthly for a weight check and blood work, and I work with a personal trainer — and they all talk to each other, working together,” Holerud says. “I also now have a membership to the 24/7 fitness center so I can do the treadmill and bike on my own.” (Clinic services are billed to one’s medical insurance plan; other services, such as trainers and use of the fitness center, are competitively priced with local gyms.) For Holerud, the medical- fitness combination has worked. “I’ve lost the weight, I’m sleeping better and the headaches have almost disappeared,” Holerud says. “I feel so much better.” “We all worked together as a team,” says Holerud. The HealthEast Stillwater Clinic Weight Loss Program is a newer primary-care clinic where all the family doctors have undergone special training through the Medical Bariatrics of America program, started by a family doctor.

It’s believed to be the only family health clinic in the Twin Cities that specializes in weight loss — both traditional and surgical options. /clinics/stillwater/about/weight-loss-program.html or call 651-471-5622.Accessible Vans offers wheelchair accessible van rentals to customers with mobility needs in the Montana area.
