My kids were supposed to be in the car with me. Thank God they weren’t. “An 18-year-old who was texting got on I-694 at Century Avenue, crossed three lanes and hit my Expedition. “I flipped end over end, landed and then was hit by a semi, which crushed the vehicle. Somehow, though, I landed on my wheels. “I was full of adrenaline, thinking the vehicle was about to go up in flames, so I kicked open the door and ran, even though the crash had blown my shoes off and I was bloody from the shattered glass.”
It was a miracle that Holerud survived the crash, but surviving has not been easy. “My knees were crushed, my heel was dislocated and my brain was bleeding in three places,” Holerud says. The aftermath of the traumatic brain injury left Holerud with persistent headaches, hearing problems and insomnia. She lives with chronic pain. As her quality of life decreased, her weight increased. “I was 80 pounds heavier,” Holerud says. I’d never been overweight before. I’d never been a gym person, but I loved riding my bike. “But, after the accident, I wasn’t sleeping more than three hours at a time. I was in a lot of pain but didn’t want to take pain medication long term. It was a vicious cycle. Holerud continued to see her doctors, but she looked elsewhere to lose weight. “I tried Weight Watchers, I tried NutriSystem, I tried LA Weight Loss, I tried Jenny Craig,” Holerud says. “I’d have some success, then stop. It just didn’t work for me;
