Once received by the Red Cross, the wheelchairs are examined to determine if they will be refurbished for re-use or responsibly recycled. The refurbished wheelchairs are then made available to the public for a nominal rental fee through the Canadian Red Cross Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP). Since 2011, Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, Assistive Devices Program division, has partnered with the Canadian Red Cross to provide a recycling program that restores, reuses, and recycles donated equipment in whole or in part, to extend product life cycle. The wheelchairs identified for re-use are fully cleaned, disinfected, and maintained so that they can effectively and safely be used again.
This initiative provides Ontarians with greater options once these wheelchairs are no longer needed and is a cost-effective alternative for those who need to purchase a wheelchair or use a wheelchair on a short-term basis. In 2013, the ADP Manual Wheelchair Recycling Program was recognized with the prestigious MOHLTC’s Achievement, Commitment, and Excellence (ACE) Award for innovation. Individuals who donate their manual wheelchair to any branch of the Canadian Red Cross may be eligible for a tax credit.
