Hello there,My name is Jules North-Coombes and I live in Melbourne, Australia. I am 21 years old and have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. It is the most common fatal genetic disorder and I was diagnosed with it when I was six years old. I am progressively losing muscle strength each day, which leads to serious medical problems, particularly issues relating to the heart and lungs. This however doesn't stop me from living my life to the fullest.I have been playing electric wheelchair sports for over ten years and have been lucky enough to represent Victoria at the past eight national championships. In that time I have helped Victoria claim four Hockey titles and one Balloon Soccer title.In 2013 I was selected to represent my state at the Powerchair Football Championships (also known as Power Soccer in the U.S). Powerchair Football is a relatively new sport in Australia and more so in Victoria. Over twenty-seven countries play the sport, with two World Cups been held in 2007 and 2011. The next one is next year and it would be a dream come true if I could one day represent my country in a sport that I truly love.
The sport is so popular and competitive that a specifically designed wheelchair was created. It's faster and more responsive, it enables those with low muscle strength such as myself to have the capability to compete against other athletes with more physical ability. It creates an even playing field when all athletes on the court have the same specially designed sports chair.This specifically designed wheelchair is called a Strikeforce. With my current chair, I am unable to compete against the best players in Australia. Engineered from the ground up, the Strikeforce outperforms every other chair on the market.Powerchair Football is the fastest growing sport for people who require the use of electric wheelchairs for everyday mobility. It is played with a 33 centimetre (diameter) football on an indoor basketball court. Eight players make up a team, with four on the court at a time.To achieve my goals of playing the sport at a higher level and one day representing my country, a Strikeforce is necessary.
There is no available grants or government funding in my state to help me buy this sports wheelchair and that’s why I’ve decided to ask for your help.Sport is my biggest passion in life. During the competition I played in a sub-par wheelchair, which put our team in jeopardy, in one match we lost to the Brisbane team 9 nil. In our last match against Western Sydney Wanderers I played my heart out and as a result my electric wheelchair overheated and because of this I had to miss half of the match.
If I were in a Strike Force, this would never have happened as they are built for the sport.
