We do have duvet covers and duvets....they are available in California - a state that I lived in most of my life so you should have no problems finding them - try Dillards or Macy's. Bed, Bath & Beyond has them duvet covers - Bed Bath & Beyond Duvet covers and duvets are popular here in the U.S. too. We usually put a sheet under the duvet cover but not on top of it.
Duvets come in several weights - I bough summer weight duvets when I lived in California...here in Kentucky where I live now it gets quite cold in the winter so I buy winter weight duvets. Supermarkets are probably not the best place to look for one even if they do seem to carry many things.
