The mattress size chart below is the perfect resource as it can give you valuable insight to the bed size you need, including some information about mattress dimensions that can come in handy when you purchase fitted sheets. In the United States, manufacturers measure their mattresses in inches. Although most people tend to pay the most attention to length and width, depth is also very important – particularly when it comes to determining how high your bed will stand off of the ground and the types of sheets you need to buy. Mattresses can range in depth from a mere four inches for bunk beds all the way up to 20 inches or more for the finest queen and king sized mattresses.
There is no real “industry standard”, so make sure that you ask about the mattress depth before you purchase it. A standard twin bed measures 39 inches wide by 75 inches long. These are usually between eight to 10 inches deep, and they are designed for a single child or adult. Particularly tall adults who want to purchase a twin bed may want to consider purchasing a twin XL, which adds an additional five inches to the overall length of the bed, bringing it to 80 inches. Mattresses for traditional bunk beds share the same dimensions as a twin, but they usually lack the same depth. A standard mattress (also called a full or double mattress) used to be the most common bed for couples when homes were much smaller than they are today. These measure 54 inches wide and 75 inches long with an average depth of between eight and 12 inches. However, with today’s larger bedrooms, couples are often advised to purchase at least a queen-sized bed. Two adults on a full-sized mattress is equal to about 27 inches of sleeping space each – the equivalent of a crib mattress.
Today, full or standard beds are common choices for single adults who prefer extra sleeping space. The queen sized mattress is the most popular size sold in the United States today. It is recommended for co-sleeping couples who either do not need a king sized bed or who do not have room for one. It measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, and it provides a comfortable 30 inches of sleeping space for each partner. Queen size beds usually have a depth between 12 and 17 inches. A traditional king sized mattress, also called “eastern king” is the same length as a queen mattress – 80 inches – but much, much wider at 76”. This is the absolute best choice for couples who like to spread out as they sleep, and it is also the best choice for people who have pets or children who love to share their beds. However, a king sized bed takes up a lot of bedroom space, so you should consider this before you make your purchase. A king bed can range from 10 inches up to 21 inches or more in depth.
A California king mattress has a completely different set of dimensions than a standard king. It is a little less wide at just 72 inches, but it boasts an 84-inch length for people who are quite tall. It is the longest bed available on the market today, and it takes up quite a bit of room thanks to its massive length. In some cases, you may need to purchase a special frame to hold a California king due to its overall length. Like a standard king, a California king bed ranges from 10 inches to 21 inches or more in depth. As you can see, mattresses come in a variety of shapes and sizes designed not only to fit in your bedroom but also to fit your sleeping habits. If you’re worried about accommodating someone significantly heavier than that but still want the power of Purple, please be assured that all users, regardless of weight, should find comfort benefits with the Purple® Bed. Please be advised that, while with the use of significantly heavier users will not void the warranty, it may cause the bed to soften more quickly than with an average-weighted user and therefore may eventually alter the Purple™ Bed’s comfort providing abilities. For the mattress cover, we recommend using a stretchy mattress protector and spot-cleaning with upholstery when it does get dirty. **The cover does zip off, but we recommend not putting it through your washing machine unless absolutely necessary. If you do, use a completely cold cycle and hang or lay flat to dry only (there is a LOT of spandex in it, so if you put it in the washer/dryer, it will shrink and that could potentially interfere with the benefits of Purple™). Why do I need stretchy sheets for my Purple® mattress? The stretchier your sheets and mattress protector, the more you’ll be able to enjoy the full benefits of Purple.
Too tight and/or non-stretchy fabrics can act as a barrier between you and the Purple so you don’t get as much pressure release as you could. Will you be selling a Purple® Topper? We may add the option of a Purple® Mattress topper in the future, but we don’t have any sort of timeline. Of course we recommend our platform base! However, the Purple just needs a sturdy surface to sit on, whether that’s a platform, slats (3″ apart or less), box foundation, an adjustable bed frame, or even the floor — it all works just fine. Make sure your mattress won’t be on a sagging frame or foundation and you’re good to go! What type of flame retardant is in the mattress? We use a fabric knit barrier that meets all of the industry standards for your safety without filling your mattress with toxic chemicals. Does it emit off-gassing? There may be a faint “new mattress” smell right when it comes out of the packaging, which the few who have noticed it have described as nutty and sweet.
If it is noticeable, it will fade within a few days and is not toxic (most toxic off-gassing that is associated with mattresses comes from memory foam, which we do not use). But we’ve invested in a super nifty mattress roller that allows us to ship Purple® Beds and Tops directly to your door in a vinyl tube with handy little handles to help you carry it. The Retailers (The stores and the sales people) If we had gone a more traditional route, Purple would be a $3000-$5000 mattress, and let’s face it, most people can’t afford that. We are so confident about this technology and how much value it will add to your life, that we are assuming all of the risk so that we can offer it to you at a much more affordable price. Do I have to rotate my Purple® mattress? We don’t have an official policy. Not required, but recommended every 6 months or so. The Purple® Mattress also shouldn’t be flipped or you could lose its benefits! You can rotate the mattress, although it’s not necessary! How do I unpack my Purple® mattress? There will be a great little Purple slicer – that looks suspiciously like a letter opener – included in the package. Use that to cut down the length of the plastic tube, (Yes, it will cut between the teeth of the zipper and through the fabric and plastic) and unroll the mattress from the several layers of purple fabric holding it together.
Your bed will be ready to sleep on right away. How firm is the Purple® mattress? Most of our customers rate our mattress a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, but it really just is personal preference! Is the Purple® mattress vegan? There are no animal products used to produce The Purple® Mattress. Can you feel your partner moving next to you on Purple? The Purple® Mattress has very limited motion transfer! You won’t feel your partner stir, those cute little ones climbing into the sheets, or those little paws finding the most comfortable position. What’s the life expectancy of the mattress? The life expectancy is around 8-10 years. That is why we have a 10 year warranty on all of our mattresses. What about shipping to rural areas? Purple ships everywhere in the US, but not at exactly the same speed. If you live in a more rural area, please note that it will most likely take longer to ship your products to you that what is estimated on the website.
