Finding the right type of mattress to suit your body and budget can be tricky, so we show you how to choose the best mattress.Memory foam, pocket sprung, latex, open coil, continuous coil... not sure which type of mattress is best for you? We look at the pros and cons of the main types of mattresses to help you find the best. There are four main mattress types to choose from. Most mattress manufacturers make more than one type - different varieties go through a different manufacturing process and cost different amounts. Price isn't everything, though, as what is most important is what you as an individual find comfortable.Use our interactive tool, below, and read our expert tips to help you decide which type of mattress to buy. Once you've made up your mind, you can use the filters on our independent mattress reviews to find your perfect mattress.
Keep reading for more information on the main type of mattress. Or, if you already know which type you want, find out how to buy the best mattress.

Pocket sprung mattressIn pocket sprung mattresses, the springs are sewn into individual fabric pockets. Pocket sprung mattresses are the most popular type of mattress among Which? members - more than half of the members we surveyed about their mattress had bought a pocket sprung one.Pocket sprung mattresses don't mould to your shape in the same way that memory foam mattresses do, but that doesn't necessarily mean they offer less support. They also tend not to be as warm as memory foam mattresses, which could be an important consideration if you tend to find yourself too warm at night. We've tested some great pocket sprung mattresses at a range of different prices, so you're sure to find one that suits you. Go to our Best Buy mattresses page to see the very best.Memory foam mattress/memory mattressMemory foam mattresses, also known as memory mattresses, are topped with a layer of temperature-sensitive viscoelastic material (memory foam). They can be expensive, but we've found some fantastic memory foam mattresses for less than £400.This makes the shape of the mattress change to fit the shape of your body, and it also tends to make the mattress feel warmer.

Everything you need to know about this increasingly popular type of mattress can be found in our memory foam mattress guide. If you already know that you want to buy a memory foam mattress, you can find the right model for your budget and body type by reading our mattress reviews.Continuous coil mattress and open coil mattress These mattresses are cheaper than other types of bed mattress. Continuous coil mattresses are made from a single looped wire Open coil mattresses are made of single springs fixed together by one wire. Because the springs move as one unit, you're more likely to be disturbed by your partner moving around during the night. The coils in these mattresses wear out more quickly than pocket springs, so you’re likely to end up rolling together eventually. When we surveyed Which? members to find out more about mattresses, those who own an open-coil mattress are less likely to say that it helps them to get a good night's sleep than those who own other types of mattress.

You can find out more about our survey results, including which brands to look out for, in our full mattress brand reviews.Latex mattressLatex is a less common type of mattress which features a core made up of layers of springy latex. These mattresses tend to be more expensive, but manufacturers claim that they are more resilient and able to better keep their shape. Manufacturer Dunlopillo specialises in latex mattresses, although the one we've reviewed doesn't come cheap.Mattress toppersThese add a layer of extra padding to your existing bed mattress. Mattress toppers can be made of memory foam or other materials. However, they can be as expensive as buying a new mattress in some cases, and won’t provide more support if your old mattress is already sagging.Discover which are the best mattress topper brands according to our survey of more than 1,000 mattress topper owners. This medium-firm mattress is slightly thicker, and therefore less firm, than our firmest option (the Americana).

Our innovative and proprietary materials let us build the one of most comfortable mattresses ever For Back & Stomach Sleepers For Side & Combo Sleepers Too firm: Pressure Points Too soft: No support Celliant® is an advanced fabric made with 13 thermoreactive minerals that helps improve the performance of the mattress. Our Bio-Pur™ foam is five times more breathable than traditional memory foam, so it wicks away heat while you sleep and can help keep you cool and comfortable.

Sag-free & Eco-friendly Support Our Bio-Core™ foam support layer won’t sag even after years of use. And, like our Bio-Pur™ foam, it’s made from plants instead of petroleum so it’s eco-friendly. Amerisleep mattresses are expertly designed to help you get more sleep — guaranteed. Our mattresses are built with performance in mind down to the last detail. That even includes the cover, which is a critical part of a mattress because it's the layer closest to your body when you sleep. Amerisleep is officially licensed to use Celliant® in our covers. This advanced fabric combines 13 minerals into thermoreactive yarn that converts body heat into infrared. Traditional memory foam is made from dense material, so it traps your body heat and can make you sweaty and uncomfortable while you’re in bed — and who can sleep like that? We developed our foam with an enhanced "open cell structure," which means there is more air space between the foam particles. That space wicks away heat while you sleep, and can keep you cooler and more comfortable.

Remember, you have 100 nights to try it for yourself - if you don't love it, give us a call and we'll pick up the mattress and refund you completely! On top of that, our foam is also the most environmentally friendly. Our patented foam-making process uses plants to replace some petroleum, and is the only manufacturing method that exceeds the standards of the Clean Air Act. Our foam is also better than traditional memory foam because it recovers its shape faster. With a typical foam mattress, you often wind up “stuck” when you change positions but the mattress is still holding your previous shape. That’s because it takes around 60 seconds for the foam to bounce back. Ours bounces back in just four seconds, so as you move at night your mattress keeps up with you, providing superior comfort. Like sleeping on air No furniture, no problem. You can put your Amerisleep mattress directly on the floor. If you want to use your existing box spring, place a piece of 3/4” moisture resistant plywood directly on top.

A flat platform will work perfectly, so long as the gaps between the slats are no more than three inches apart. Adding an adjustable base can elevate your comfort, allowing you to read or watch tv in bed. Imagine waking up each morning with no pain and increased energy. How would that change the way you approach your day? Would you finally be able exercise regularly? Would you be able to perform better at work instead of constantly feeling groggy and needing another cup of coffee? Sleep quality is so important because we spend about a third of our lives in bed! That means, besides our jobs and our families, our sleep probably has the biggest impact in our quality of life. The number of daily problems that go away with a good night’s sleep is astounding — but that only happens if you actually do something to improve your sleep. If you just keep things the same, you’ll keep getting the same disappointing results. And don’t you deseve better? Order today for the best sleep ever.

Learn more about how our warranty protects you on our Warranty Information page. Amerisleep is one of the most eco-friendly mattress companies. From the way we make our foam all the way through how it arrives at your door, we work hard to use processes that are sustainable — literally from start to finish. First, our patented Variable Pressure Foaming (VPF) process allows us to use plant-based materials to replace some petroleum, so it's better for the environment. It also reclaims and recycles any waste, so there is no air pollution. It's the only process for making foam that meets the Clean Air Act's standards. Once we've made your mattress, we pack it up in a box made from post-consumer materials before shipping it to your door. Being more eco-friendly is just one more thing that makes our mattresses different than our competitors.

Your mattress ships to you compressed in an eco-friendly box small enough that we can use FedEx. That means it gets to you quickly, usually within a week of your purchase!
