When it comes to building muscle, though, two popular products are Branched-chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) and Glutamine. Again, they each claim to be the best. But what does science say? Which is better for muscle gain? As the name suggests, BCAAs are amino acids that have a fairly unique chemical structure. Rather than just being an issue of shape or appearance, the branched chain design of these aminos allows them to be absorbed and used more rapidly by the body. Though they are generally packaged as a group, these supplements actually contain three different amino acids – leucine, isoleucine, and valine. Each of these three aminos, although they have similar structures and are therefore usually found together, play different roles in the body – which we’ll discuss in greater detail later. Similarly, glutamine is an amino acid that is found in high concentrations in meat, eggs, whey, and casein. Glutamine has been explored for a variety of potential benefits, including muscle building and improved exercise performance.




It is interesting to note that certain muscle wasting conditions cause a decrease in glutamine, as does prolonged aerobic exercise. At the same time,  isoleucine encourages the uptake of glucose into cells, helping to support and speed up a huge array of biological systems. More research is needed to fully understand what valine brings to the mix but it appears to have a slight influence on muscle protein synthesis, though not nearly as potent as leucine.
