Reacting to Cawthorne’s year-long jail sentence, she said: “I am really pleased – I never expected her to be jailed. “I had written the money off because I had to, so, in a way, the jail sentence has been worth the £1,000.” Cawthorne promised brides-to-be celeb-style receptions with chocolate fountains and snow machines. But, after charging up to £1,400 for items like bespoke bouquets, table centre pieces and chair covers, she left couples to walk into bare rooms without a single decoration inside. Cawthorne even lived the high life at Walt Disney World in Florida, gambling away thousands of pounds as couples were left high and dry back home. Jade and husband Andrew, aged 32, paid the crook a total of £1,053 for wedding decorations at the Castle Hotel in Tamworth. But Cawthorne failed to show up on the big day, September 20, 2013, and Jade had to find another £400 for the hotel to provide decorations.
“We paid Sarah to do everything from chair covers, to flowers and centre pieces,” she said. “It wasn’t just a couple of things – I kept adding to my order each time. “I started to get bad vibes a few weeks before when I saw some comments on the internet about her company. “I was really stressed and couldn’t sleep. “Sarah told me she had not been well but reassured me everything would be fine. “I even told her that if she wanted to pull out, I would understand but again she reassured me. “She said she was ill and I believed her. “I never thought for a second that she was up to no good. “By the morning of my wedding, I think I knew she was not going to turn up. “The hotel staff were brilliant, they really came to my rescue.” The couple spent their honeymoon in Brixham because their ordeal was never far from Jade’s mind. “It wasn’t really a honeymoon because my phone was going off constantly with calls from other victims,” she said. “It was really hard to relax and try to forget about what had happened.”
Other victims also welcomed Cawthorne’s sentence. It was imposed at Wolverhampton Crown Court after the 32-year-old, of Hickmerelands Lane, Sedgley, admitted fraudulent trading between July 2012 and September 2013. Lizzie Darlow, 48, helped plan her daughter, Kirstie Walker’s wedding in 2013. She lost nearly £1,000 to the fraudster after ordering crystal trees, centrepieces and a photo booth. Kirstie married Daniel, both from Northfield, at the South Crest Manor Hotel in Redditch in July 2013. “We had the full works,” Lizzie said. “We had seven foot crystal trees and crystals covering the archway leading towards the aisle. “It was very stressful for me because I wanted everything to be perfect for my daughter. “I started losing sleep and getting very anxious when I realised what was going on. “Luckily I had insurance, so I managed to get most of the money back. “But a lot of others lost an awful lot of money.” Trish Topping also booked Cawthorne’s services for her daughter’s wedding but found, on the day of the wedding, that the reception venue had not been touched.
“We were devastated,” Trish said. “Cawthorne told me she had been in a car crash and the money would be refunded within seven days. “I waited but it never arrived.
