The third annual I Do Wedding Awards will once again take place in the stunning Sheffield City Hall Ballroom on 16th May 2017. This prestige event will bring together the areas finest wedding suppliers as voted by newlyweds from across Yorkshire and the East Midlands. Over 300 suppliers entered the 2016 awards, over 100 made the finals and 25 Category Winners were announced as voted for by the regions newlyweds. The awards acknowledge and recognise the wedding suppliers that have gone above and beyond to make couples wedding days extra special. Each category was very closely contested, so to all who made it as finalists, well done! You represent the very best of our regions wedding industry. Hosted by Capital FM’s Jojo, over 250 people were in attendance at Sheffield City Hall’s Ballroom. There was a red carpet arrival and champagne reception allowing guests to network, relax and soak up the atmosphere before being seated to dinner. Guests tucked into their three course meal, followed by Coffee whilst being entertained by the sounds of local musician James Sunderland.

Part of the awards, as well as honouring our local wedding suppliers achievements is to raise much needed funds for local Charities. The chosen charity for the 2016 event was The Laura Crane Trust. The Trust supports young cancer patients to help improve their quality of life both during and after their debilitating illnesses. It is also the only UK charity that funds medical research specifically into cancer affecting teenagers and young adults. Cancer is the most common cause of non-accidental death in young people in the UK. These peoples' lives will be forever change after this illness and the Trust is here to support them through it. A charity prize draw was held with guests donating a minimum of £10 for a balloon for the chance to win some pretty amazing donated prizes. The positive response was astonishing as balloons were sold out in a matter of seconds! After a 3-2-1 countdown, all balloons were popped and guests got to see who won. The sound of 125 balloons popping simultaneously was amazing and was a great sight to behold.

A massive £1250 was raised on the night to support the trust so a huge thankyou goes out to all those who donated and took part. We would particularly like to thank the following companies who donated some wonderful prizes for this noble cause: PRIZE DONATION: Occasion hair styling at Beau hair. Mum-of-two Sarah Cawthorne promised hundreds of couples celeb-style receptions with chocolate fountains and snow machines. But she blew every penny on gambling sites like Betfred and King Jack – leaving tearful brides to walk into bare rooms without a single decoration inside.

Cawthorne even lived the high life at Walt Disney World in Florida, gambling away thousands of pounds as couples were left high and dry back home in the UK. Scores of her victims banded together to form a Facebook page called Burned Brides to fight for justice. Mark Jackson, prosecuting on behalf of Dudley trading standards, described the fraud as “persistent, systematic and very mean indeed”. He told Wolverhampton Crown Court: “In some cases, the first brides heard about this fraud was when they received a call from their venue, as they were about to walk down the aisle, to be told the venue was bare. “Investigations showed that on one day, when a number of bookings had been made in October 2012, she was spending thousands of pounds in Florida in Disney World while leaving her customers high and dry. “Police and trading standards received complaint after complaint. “A complaint on August 20, 2013 was the first of what proved to be an avalanche of complaints.” The court heard Cawthorne’s firm, A Little Bit of Bling, charged up to £1,400 to provide items including bespoke bouquets, table centre pieces and chair covers.

In some cases, the 32-year-old booked multiple weddings on the same day across the UK, which she had no intention of honouring. She also promoted “special offers” on condition couples paid the full amount in cash up front. The court heard the total amount of victims was unknown but ran into the hundreds. Cawthorne told one bride on September 20, 2013, that she was unable to attend because of a family emergency in Peterborough. But Mr Jackson said bank records showed she had been in a McDonalds restaurant at Dudley Castle on the day. Further checks showed four cash transactions to King Jack and three to Paddy Power on February 20, 2013. In July, more than 100 more transactions were paid to Paddy Power and another 38 were made in August. And in just six days in September 2013, she made five transfers totalling £71,000 to her Paddy Power and King Jack betting accounts to feed her addiction. It was not known where the rest of the cash came from. Cawthorne, of Hickmerelands Lane, Sedgley, admitted fraudulent trading between July 2012 and September 2013 at an earlier hearing.

The court heard investigators did not know what had happened to the money in the gambling accounts, because they were held off shore. But an application was made for a full investigation under the Proceeds of Crime Act. The prosecution also confirmed that almost all of the victims had been unable to recover the money they handed over. Mukhtar Ubhi, defending, said she had been suffering from a gambling addiction and depression. He said: “This addiction to gambling is no less crippling than one to drugs or alcohol. “A large amount of money was spent trying to recoup the losses. “Help is what she needed at the time. “This was not started as a fraudulent company from the outset. “The addiction got on top of her.” Judge Martin Walsh had to halt proceedings twice as Cawthorne broke down in tears and appeared to be sick in the dock. Jailing her for 12 months, he said the victims had been emotionally traumatised. He told Cawthorne: “A large number of customers were let down on their special day and that was a direct result of deliberate dishonesty on your part. “

They trusted you and you had not intention of fulfilling the contracts. “They were vulnerable to that extent. “The aggravating feature in this case is the distress you have caused. “You took in excess of £30,000. “The exact number of victims is uncertain, but it is in the hundreds.” Speaking before today’s sentencing hearing, victim Sarah Broadley, from Dudley, said she was left devastated by Cawthorne’s deceit over her wedding in September 2013. She said: “Sarah Cawthorne had told me that she’d be there at 9.30am. “At 9.45am I got agitated and phoned her, then texted a message asking if all was OK. “She said she wasn’t coming – it was 11am and the wedding was at 4pm. “I broke down and was absolutely gutted.” Today’s sentence was welcomed by Dudley Council principal trading standards officer Chris King. He said: “We are satisfied the dishonesty of this scam was appreciated by the court. “We hope the sentence serves as a deterrent to anybody else who thinks they can scam members of the public.
