The jury heard that the balaclava-clad gunman marched into the hotel reception in Slough, Berkshire, leaned over the groom's shoulder and opened fire on his groin, just missing his genitals.The victim of the "grotesque" attack was just centimetres away from an horrific injury but the bullet entered his upper thigh and shattered against bone.Joseph Mitchell was left with fragments of bullet permanently lodged in his thigh because doctors thought it was safer to leave them than risk severing arteries by trying to remove them.Three men appeared before a judge today for the start of a trial set to last between four and six weeks.Brothers Jason and Kirk McInerney, aged 20 and 18 years and Martin Carty, who told police he was their 18-year-old cousin, are jointly charged with attempted murder and robbery.The court heard from prosecuter John Price that the Mitchell and Murphy families had arrived at the wedding reception in Slough, Berkshire, after a church service when the attack happened at 4.30pm.
He described how a "stocky" man wearing a balaclava walked up to the top table, leaned over the groom's shoulder and fired the gun once into his lap. He then fired at least one more time into the air to cause panic in the room.Tables, chairs and crockery went flying as the guests scrambled for safety and the gunman made his escape.Chillingly, the bride's brother, who had left the reception to go to the toilet when the uninvited guest arrived, saw a second gunman in the hallway who said "walk away or I'll blow your head off." Mr Price said: "At least one guest on seeing the gunman enter thought that his arrival was some sort of party prank arranged as part of the entertainment of the wedding." He went on: "Though no-one had seen it since the man entered the room, he was in fact carrying a loaded handgun."From behind Mr Mitchell and over Mr Mitchell's right shoulder, this balaclava-clad man placed the gun into Mr Mitchell's seated lap and he fired."There was a huge noise, as one would expect and again, as you would expect, panic ensued."
Mr Price directed the jury at Reading Crown Court to photographs taken after the attack, of the dining room at the Skyways Hotel on the A4 east of Slough town centre."Upended chairs and broken crockery and glass give a sense of the panic as guests struggled to get out of the room," he said.The injured groom was rushed to Wexham Park Hospital, Slough, where the bullet was found to have entered his upper right thigh.Mr Price went on: "It is possible to say from the evidence that this was, say the prosecution, a carefully planned and pre-meditated attack."Somebody wanted young Joseph Mitchell dead or at the very least sexually mutilated." The court also heard how the trio had attacked and beaten a man to steal a powerful high specification VW Golf to use as a getaway car on the day of the wedding - November 25 2006.Carty, of Kingsbury, north west London, Jason McInerney, of Romford, Essex, and Kirk McInerney, of no fixed abode, all deny attempted murder - with an alternative charge of causing grievous bodily harm - and robbery.
