Katie and Stacey Tushingham-Wright from Buckley say they forked out £925 to LA Weddings and Events for venue decorations only to discover two weeks before their big day the firm had gone into voluntary liquidation. The couple, who saved for two years for the day, had ordered chair covers with sashes, an aisle runner and bay trees for their ceremony at the Clwyd Room in Theatr Clwyd from the Cambridgeshire-based firm. They also paid for table centres and covers, additional chair covers and sashes, a starlit backdrop, a cake stand, a chocolate fountain and 4ft LED letters spelling 'love' for their reception at Buckley Working Men’s Club.
Katie, 32, said: “As I was walking into work on June 14 I was checking Facebook on my mobile and I stopped in my tracks as I read the status from LA Weddings and Events saying they had gone into liquidation. “I couldn’t stop thinking that our perfect wedding, in just two week’s time was ruined. Stacey and I had used all our savings from over two years on the wedding, we were in shock and just so upset and confused. We didn’t know what to do at first.” She added: “We found LA Weddings and Events online and completed some research to ensure it was a legitimate company. They were recommended by various websites and when we contacted them they were very co-operative. “We requested to pay by credit card but they would only accept bank transfer but it didn’t trigger any alarm bells as our research showed they were a well-established company. “We’ve not had any direct contact with them since they went bust and it is unlikely we’ll ever get our money back.” Luckily, staff at Theatr Clwyd went “totally above and beyond” to save the day on June 29 by swapping their ceremony from the Clwyd Room to the Anthony Hopkins where the couple wed on stage in front of 170 guests which was set up for Much Ado About Nothing.
They also praised Buckley firm Sugar & Spice on Brunswick Road, who stepped in at short notice to “transform” their reception venue. Katie added: “We cannot thank Theatr Clwyd and Sugar & Spice enough. Although we were so upset and let down by LA Weddings & Events, our wedding day turned out to be better than we could of ever imagined.” Lopsided wedding cake makers cleared by public health probe Tamara Harvey, artistic director of Theatr Clwyd, said: “We had such a wonderful time creating Much Ado About Nothing and it makes the experience even more special knowing that our set then became the setting for a genuine wedding! “I feel so privileged that my first production for Theatr Clwyd was also home to our first marriage ceremony - and we look forward to offering many more couples the chance to get married in our unique and magical venue.” Lisa Arbon of LA Weddings and Events told the Daily Post her firm fell apart after her business partners "unexpectedly" left. She claimed that she was unable to cope with the workload.
