The budget store has slashed the cost of hundreds of products by half as millions of shoppers hit high streets across Britain for the Boxing Day sales. The half-price event was first launched on Christmas Eve, when customers could buy last-minute decorations, wrapping paper and presents for incredible prices. These included the Home Alone DVD and coloured LED lights. But it is still in effect today, with eager shoppers seen lining up outside branches of the discount store, waiting for their doors to open.
Some social media users expressed their disbelief at the sale. Twitter user Aimee Rowlands wrote: "No way is Poundland doing a 50p sale what." Ryan Crooks added: "Even Poundland is having a maaaad Boxing Day sale." And a third user, called Becky, posted: "The size of the que outside poundland for the boxing day sales is unreal (sic)." Shoppers are expected to spend a staggering £4billion in today's sales bonanza. Some bargain hunters flocked to stores just before midnight on Christmas Day in a bid to snap up the best deals, with massive price cuts. In Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, more than 800 people were pictured eagerly queuing outside Next - which is famous for its festive sales. One woman could be seen sitting in a chair, huddled in a blanket and scrolling through her phone, as she waited in line alongside other shoppers. People were also spotted queuing in Birmingham - where Next was due to open at 6am, Debenhams at 7am and the Bull Ring shopping centre at 8am. Twitter users described their bemusement at the scenes, deeming bargain hunters 'crazy' for getting up in the middle of the night to shop.

Many of the UK's adult population are expected to be on a sales spree across high streets and shopping malls today - as well as an online blitz. Debenhams – which opened at 7am – is offering half-price clothing across the board, with a Star by Julien Macdonald animal-print coat down to £60, men’s J by Jasper Conran shirts for £20 and girls’ pyjama and dressing gown sets for £15. Meanwhile, Currys PC World , which was ready for business at some branches from 6am, has sent the cost of must-have curved 4K tellies crashing by almost a third. It has a Samsung 49in 4K TV for £649, down from £899. And Argos has slashed prices by up to 50 per cent, such as a Calverley dining table and four chairs down from £299 to £139 and a Britax Evolva car seat, down to £89 from £139. And the Entertainer is cutting prices by up to 80%. Figures from the Centre for Retail Research and vouchercodes.co.uk reveal Britons will blow £2.95billion in shops and £984million online.
This is £3.93billion in total – nearly double the £2billion spent on Black Friday. However, other research suggests consumer appetite for the December 26 sales has dampened this year against a backdrop of extended discounting by squeezed retailers. A quarter of Britons (23 per cent) will shop in the Boxing Day sales, down from 32 per cent last year, according to a survey by Barclaycard. The figures suggest incentive to buy in the sales has weakened following widespread discounting, including Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Despite this, shoppers are expected to spend £7.6 billion between Boxing Day and December 29, with 67 per cent of this going into high street tills. The New West End Company is among those expecting a bumper Boxing Day, projecting a spend of £55 million, which they attribute to a sustained increase in trade from international shoppers after the Brexit vote. Jace Tyrrell, chief executive, said: "Boxing Day always delivers for the West End but this year promises to be especially strong for retailers as visitors from around the globe make the most of the amazing deals available from our world-class mix of retailers combined with the relative value of the weak pound. "
We expect a significantly higher number of Chinese tourists to come over specifically to bargain hunt." Myf Ryan, chief marketing officer, Westfield UK and Europe, said: "Boxing Day continues to be Westfield's busiest day of the Christmas trading period. "Last year over 330,000 shoppers visited our two Westfield centres in London and again this year we are expecting similar numbers. "During the Christmas period last year, shoppers spent over £500,000 per hour. "Westfield centres are popular shopping destinations with the large majority of our 300 retailers all on sale. "The entertainment, dining and cinema offerings also draw in the customers particularly with the new big holiday film releases."
