FACEBOOKThe alleged victim, Russell Lucas Allen, said his belongings and those of his dog Lexy, were destroyed.He wrote a post on Facebook stating the store, in Portsmouth, “ruined clothing, food, dog bedding, public donations brought by the kind members of public”.In the post, which garnered hundreds of supportive comments, Mr Allen also described how when he and friends had complained about the incident.He said: “When confronting the guard I got told I deserve it.”Having spotted his post online, outraged members of the public launched a petition calling on the guard to be disciplined, which garnered more than 8,000 signatures within 24 hours.
FACEBOOKMr Allen, together with Paul Godier, chair of Portsmouth city council’s homelessness taskforce,, said he and Allen had held “constructive” meetings with Debenhams staff and expected the store to offer training to its employees.Allen claimed he never expected such a reaction and said: “I didn’t think such a small incident would escalate into such a big situation.“I just want to tell everyone I appreciate the love that everyone has shown me… if anything, it will make people think differently towards homeless people and those less fortunate.”Mr Allen’s experience comes shortly after homelessness charity Crisis published a report, based on a survey of 458 rough sleepers, which found that almost eight out of ten had suffered some sort of violence, abuse or anti-social behaviour in the past year – often committed by a member of the public.People sleeping on the street are almost 17 times more likely to have been victims of violence and 15 times more likely to have suffered verbal abuse in the past year compared to the general public.
