It is not 3" thick, it is closer to 1" thick. Also, it's packaging contains a sticker noting that this mattress pad contains products known in the state of California to cause cancer. We know that it will provide you years of comfort. Upon removing it from the packaging you may notice a newness scent. In order to maximize your enjoyment of this product, it is recommended that you air it out for 8 or more hours in a well ventilated space before using, to allow the newness scent to completely dissipate." Most (not all) of the odor did dissipate, but I'm wondering if it's toxic in nature? Most of the bad smell has dissipated, but not all. Now, however -- the additional 4" of height to my already tall q/size mattress has made it a challenge for my old body to get on and off the bed without twisting so now I have a slight side-ache from getting off the high bed, this morning. At first I just thought my hot flashes were getting out of hand...................... until I spoke to another friend who also had them.I love those things.
