De Eames collectie is tot stand gekomen door de ontwerpers Charles Eames en Ray Eames. Dit was een echtpaar uit Amerika. Charles studeerde architectuur aan de universiteit van Washington. Ray studeerde Schilderkunst aan de het Bennett College in Millbrook in New York. In 1941 trouwt ze met Charles Eames en zo kreeg ook zij de achternaam ‘Eames’. Charles en Ray experimenteerden met allerlei materialen en hadden de tijdgeest mee: de opkomende consumptiemaatschappij was in volle gang. Charles en Ray speelden hierop in. Daarnaast kon door de toenemende industrialisatie een stoel makkelijker worden gereproduceerd en zo konden zij de stoelen weer verkopen. Dit was vooral van toepassing op de Eames Plastic Chairs. De Plastic Chairs zijn ontworpen en voor het eerst gemaakt in 1950. Het Museum of Modern Art organiseerde in die jaren de wedstrijd 'Low Cost Furniture Design'. Het duo Eames deed mee met de Eames Plastic Chairs, die al snel in productie genomen werden. De Eames Plastic Chairs zijn de eerste stoelen ter wereld die in grote oplage industrieel geproduceerd konden worden, dankzij de industrialisatie, zoals hierboven al is genoemd.
En nog steeds zijn de Plastic Chairs ontzettend populair. En niet alleen de Plastic Chairs, maar alles wat door het duo Eames is ontworpen blijft ongekend populair. Misschien zijn de stoelen van dit echtpaar wel de grootste designklassiekers die er bestaan. Het duo wordt beschouwd als de grondlegger van modern design. Hun prachtige collectie met veelzijdige designiconen, zal waarschijnlijk altijd als 'modern design' beschouwd blijven worden. Sommige stoelen vallen nu eenmaal wat meer op dan de ander. De Vitra Coconut stoel is daar een voorbeeld van. Deze stoel is ontworpen door George Nelson. Deze stoel is een goed voorbeeld van design uit de jaren 50. De stoel lijkt wel op een kokosnoot, maar ook weer niet precies. Dit komt omdat Nelson de fauteuil vergeleek met een in acht partjes gehakte kokosnoot, maar dan met omgekeerde kleuren. Door de ruime schaal oogt de stoel uitnodigend en comfortabel. Ook de Vitra Panton stoel van Verner Panton is opvallend door zijn vormgeving.
Panton wou een comfortabele, universeel inzetbare stoel uit één stuk creëren en zo kwam het ontwerp van de Vitra Panton tot stand. Panton heeft jarenlang gezocht naar de juiste fabrikant voor zijn ontwerp en vond er uiteindelijk één. Na de productie in 1967 was de stoel gelijk een razend succes. De stoel heeft verschillende prijzen ontvangen. Eén van de eerste Vitra Panton stoelen staat nu in het Museum of Modern Art in New York.
