From the tub in the penthouse of the New York by Gehry skyscraper on Beekman St., you can see to the Catskill Mountains. As you wash your face at the sink, you can look in the mirror and see the rising One World Trade. And as you lather up in the shower, take a gander at the Woolworth Building. The views at the Frank Gehry-designed instant landmark can feed your soul. The rents, however, can drain your Swiss bank account. Susan Watts/New York Daily News Matthew Roberts for New York Daily News PRNewsFoto/Forest City Ratner Companies, Gehry Partners, LLP It’ll cost $45,000 to $60,000 a month to live in the penthouses in the tower, which offers the ultimate bragging right: there is no higher apartment in the Western hemisphere. "You're higher than the helicopters up here," said Cliff Finn, president of New Development Marketing at Citi Habitats, charged with renting the three 850-foot-high units. "These are the best apartments in the top rental building in the world by the top architect in the world.”

The views are stunning. From the living room, you can see the Atlantic Ocean and the Tappan Zee Bridge. The apartments are not only high, but high-end, with Duravit tubs in the bathrooms, Toto Eco Nexus toilets, six-burner Miele stoves, and Sub-Zero icemakers. And renters have access to the building’s amenities, including an indoor pool, baby grand piano, and personal Pilates rooms. But you pay for what you get. The two three-bedroom penthouses cost $45,000 per month, or $540,000 per year. The four-bedroom, 3,800 square-foot north unit, which rents for $60,000 a month, comes with an extra studio unit (after all, if you can afford paying $720,000 a year in rent, you can have full-time, live-in help). Finn priced the units on par with what condo owners at top buildings such as the Waldorf Astoria, 15 Central Park West, and the Time Warner Center charge when they rent out their apartments. Gehry did not only create the wave-like exterior of the stainless steel-colored building, he had a hand in every aspect of the interior, right down to designing the floorplans and doorknobs.

"These penthouses are for two kinds of people," said Susi Yu, a vice president for Forest City Ratner Companies, which developed the tower. "One, it's bragging rights to have the most expansive views in New York and live in a Frank Gehry building. Two, you have to really appreciate the finest architecture and design in the world.” In either case, we’re talking about rich people. The average income of renters who live above the 52nd floor is $606,000. More than 20 percent of those renters earn more than $1 million annually. Forest City Ratner also built the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Chairman Bruce Ratner is a part owner of the Brooklyn Nets, but rent discounts to players are not available.
