Areaux, 23, was excited to reveal news of the first grandchild in the family during the holidays and took the pictures to be developed at the Meijer in Plainwell. She had planned to get the photos printed so she could wrap them up like Christmas gifts, which she knew would be extra special for one sick relative. Jordan Areaux and her boyfriend Masyn Lehl took these special pregnancy announcement photographs to surprise their families on Christmas day But their secret was ruined when they got their photos developed at a Meijer photo lab in Plainwell, Michigan, and the employees texted them to people in the small town 'My grandma actually has cancer, so we were going to kind of surprise her,' Areaux told WWMT. But that precious moment was ruined when some employees at the lab took pictures of her developed photographs and began spreading them around the small town. Areaux went to high school with two women who worked in the photo lab and said she believes they began texting her photos to others.
Areaux went to high school with two women who worked in the lab and said she believes they began spread her photos to 'be mean' 'I think the girls were trying to start drama and be mean,' she told Michigan Live. She was sent a screenshot by a friend of one of the texts, which included her photo and the message: 'Congrats?' One of Lehl's friends also texted him about the picture, writing: 'You didn't tell me you were going to be a dad.' 'I was really upset,' Areaux said. 'It was supposed to be a surprise and now half of Allegan knew.' Both Areaux and Lehl's families found out about the photos long before Christmas came. Meijer said it has since fired the employees who were involved in the incident. 'We followed our standard protocol and once we received the complaint we immediately started an investigation,' the store said in a statement. 'All photo department team members are required to adhere to a strict confidentiality policy.' 'When this came to our attention we took it very seriously.'
She was sent a screenshot by a friend of one of the texts, which included her photo and the message: 'Congrats?'The Allegan County Sheriff's department is also investigating to determine if the photo leak was a crime. Areaux filed a complaint with the department after she became unsatisfied with how Meijer handled the scandal. The expectant mother said it took a week and a number of phone calls before she heard back from the store's director, and that she has yet to receive a formal apology or a reimbursement for her photo order. Areaux said she has also heard rumors that the employees weren't actually fired, but had quit instead.'I wanted Meijer to take this a little more seriously so it doesn't happen again,' she said. The Allegan County Prosecutor's Office will ultimately determine whether to press charges after the sheriff's investigation is complete. But Areaux said for now she will no longer be a customer at Meijer. 'It's probably going to be a while,' she said, 'Before I go back there.'
