A WEEK out from its official opening, supersized retailer Costco is getting ready to milk it with its 94.9c/litre Devondale offer — the first taste of savings in store for its members.Costco offered a peek through the Kilburn warehouse today, which is still a work site where 275 staff are undergoing final training before the opening next Wednesday. While some of the products, including toilet rolls, are still being tagged and prices are subject to change, The Advertiser can reveal some of the supermarket basket savings for the 7000 SA Costco members that have shelled out the $60 annual fee.Devondale’s full cream long life milk pack of 10 one-litre cartons is for $9.49, compared to neighbouring Coles’ $1.44 per litre price.A 224-pack of Huggies nappies (up to 5kg) costs $65.99 at 29c each with Coles offering a 108 pack of the same at $33 or 31c a piece.Costco’s two-pack 400g Moccona classic roast coffee price for $35.49 is stronger than the Coles special deal on one for $18, otherwise priced at $22.99.A 1.5kg Nestle Milo at Costco is available for $14.29 compared to a 1.25kg option for $15.There are clear savings to clean up on the two-pack Finish Quantum Powerball (gel) 40 at $23.69 instead of paying $27.99 for one at the regular retailer.

A six-feet teddy bear, seasonal golf cart, 5kg Nutella and 85-inch Panasonic Viera TV may be a bit out there, but the store’s 3600 items have everything from Christmas shopping to branded clothing to books, fresh food and vegetables and bakery items.Costco’s own brand Kirkland, which contributes to about 10 per cent of its earnings worldwide, is available across most of the products on offer. The retailer’s 16-bowser fuel station at Churchill Rd, Kilburn, which opened last month, is offering unleaded petrol at 119.7c today — compared to the average price of 128.8c across Adelaide.“Adelaide can expect new, innovate retailing that you typically don’t see here ... great brands and great prices,” said Costco Australia managing director Patrick Noone.“Typically families will shop here once every two to three weeks and buy 60 rolls of bathroom tissue and often, it should last you for a full month. So every time you buy, you save $4-5 every time.”Mr Noone couldn’t say exactly how many of the products were Australian made, but said more than 70 per cent were sourced from Australia with familiar brands mixed in with imported well-known ones like Nike and Speedo.“

Local retailers’ (fuel) been fairly aggressively competing with us. It’s good for the consumer. Competition breeds better service, better quality products and better prices.“This will be a refreshing and a big change and big challenge to the retailers in Adelaide. And consumers are going to win out of more competition all the time.”Both the major retailers and Foodland welcomed competition.A Woolworths spokesperson said it is “Australia’s lowest priced full range supermarket and welcomed competition”.Foodland CEO Russell Markham said the stores don’t charge customers or make them buy in bulk to shop in the stores.“We may be able to reduce our prices even more if we opted to charge every customer a $60 membership fee.The Sefton Plaza Foodland store, however, refused to provide prices on items compared.Coles had not yet responded at the time of publishing.Costco has already obtained South Australian produce for its stores in other states, sourcing various varieties of potatoes and two onion varieties from Virginia farms and hothouse tomatoes from the D’Vine Ripe tomato farm at Two Wells.Costco also bought abalone from Ausab, prawns from Angelakis Bros and beef sausages from Slape and Sons, while its chickens were raised by Lilydale in South Australia. The retailer said it had received a good response from business members

, including restaurants, who pay $55 per year.A third of its members in SA are business clients.Mr Noone broke Costco’s silence on the death of landscape gardener Jacob Porter on the site late last month, saying it was a terrible tragedy.“We are putting a plaque outside in the landscaping area, but we haven’t finalised those details,” he said.He declined to comment on claims safety barriers and speed humps at the Costco construction site were removed just days before Mr Porter was killed because the retailer wanted to appear ready for opening.“It’s really under investigation by SafeWork SA and the police and I don’t think I can add to that,” he said. The brass plaque on a rock is being made up in consultation with Mr Porter’s family, he said.Former Queenslander Teri Moore has been appointed warehouse manager. The US-owned entity opens in South Australia at 8am next Wednesday. In Chinese medicine, your Qi (pronounced ‘chee’) is the vital energy or life force that fuels your daily activities, and Defensive Qi is a specific form of Qi responsible for maintaining your resistance against disease. According to this philosophy, a deficiency or imbalance of Defensive Qi may cause you to feel run down, repeatedly catch minor respiratory infections such as colds or flu, or lead to symptoms of sore throat, runny nose, fatigue or poor concentration. Astra 8® Immune Tonic combines eight powerful herbal medicines traditionally used to restore and maintain Qi, thus supporting your resistance against minor infections. Astragalus is a warming herb that restores Qi and supports Lung Qi. Its traditional use as a supportive remedy for those prone to colds is supported by scientific studies showing that it modulates key immune system cells. Other herbs in Astra 8® Immune Tonic that support Qi and immune health include: Schisandra, traditionally considered particularly beneficial for the Lung organ-meridian (which is responsible for the production and distribution of Defensive Qi)

Reishi mushroom (also known as Ganoderma), which is traditionally taken to relieve weakness and fatigue , improve stamina, and help reduce susceptibility to recurrent upper respiratory infections Siberian ginseng, which may have a modulating effect on key types of immune cells involved in fighting minor infection, while also helping to improve the body’s ability to adapt to stressIf symptoms persist consult your healthcare practitioner.
