Veganism is about doing the best you can to decrease harm to nonhumans without allowing yourself to get sick or die. It's up to Vegans to decide how far they want to push that. Some Vegans refuse to let doctors kill an animal to transplant a body part into them, and that's admirable (and the path I would take). B12 is luckily not in that severe a category. I could do an entire essay on moral justification and moral excuse (and I am currently writing one) but for now, I'll stick to the subject you asked about.3. Don't listen to the people who say you can get B12 from fortified foods only! I used to be one of those people, but I learned the hard way. I went Vegan almost 2 years ago, and around 7 months ago I started feeling lethargic. This was right around the time I first got Husky, which is the Ct., USA program for Medicaid. My doctor ran blood tests and found I was deficient in B12 and D. I checked around, and found out that the cheapest options for me was to get the B12 injections prescribed by my doctor, which are Vegan (Always do your research!
I called the manufacturers) and that the D pills prescribed were non-Vegan (gelatin in gelcaps) so I had to find a cheap source of D. , but it's time consuming, and if you aren't dead broke, you can just buy it, it's not that exp. You can also just buy a sublingual B12 spray, which I recommend instead of pills, since B12 pills are not as easily absorbed. More on that later.Unless you live near the equator, chances are you too will need to also take D, since the only way we get enough is from strong sun exposure. Just eating fortified foods isn't enough, not for Vegans, but not even for non-Vegans either. I'll be linking you to more info on that at the bottom.4. B12 deficiency almost always takes much longer to manifest than 2 months, and the symptoms show up long before you would have any severely debilitating effects. It was over a year before I had any noticeable problem, and then it was similar to a cold or flu. You're doing good by getting ahead of the problem this early. Having said that, I'll get to the links that will help you with more info.
