Old vintage chair frame.If proposing a trade, I don't need anything so just let me know what you have to offer.Seems to me, if you want a home with personality and character, you can do one of two things: Spend a decade or more sifting through thrift stores and flea markets for storied finds that will endure the test of time. Or you can hire Tara Mangini and Percy Bright of Jersey Ice Cream Co., the full-service design known for their unique approach in which they literally move into a space to get a better feel for it. The duo’s latest project: a Revolutionary War home in the Hudson Valley. Tara and Percy’s clients, a young Brooklyn-based couple looking to relocate to the Hudson Valley, were actually renting this historic property in Old Chatham while they looked for a home of their own. Replete, as it was, with historic detail, the couple quickly realized they’d already found exactly what they were looking for.




Luckily the owners were willing to sell. Unlike many of Jersey Ice Cream Co.’s projects, this Hudson Valley home came with a lot of charm, including wide-planked floors, exposed beams, and many original built-in cabinets. For Percy and Tara, the mission was to bring a more cohesive look to the space and to modernize it, without losing any of the historic character. Above: Minimal intervention on the existing kitchen island included nixing the legs that hung awkwardly off the overhanging countertop, plastering the walls, refreshing the trim paint, and a row of Bay Counter Bar Stools from Room & Board. Above: Ripping out a “hideous” black tile backsplash, Percy and Tara added additional character and kitchen storage with beadboard, Shaker pegs, and shelving. To create a more cohesive look, they also extended the counters to the wall and adjusted the height so that they aligned with the window sills. The walls in the whole kitchen received Percy’s favored plaster coating; the trim is Olympic Mountains by Benjamin Moore. Above: To complement the soapstone sink, Tara chose a vintage-style bridge faucet by Barber Wilson. Above: In the lofty dining room, a long table designed and built by Percy himself sits under two Bungalow Pendant Lights from Anthropologie ($198 each). Downstairs, the wide-plank floors were already painted a uniform soft cream color, which Tara and Percy chose to keep. For an even more unified look, Percy applied his signature textured plaster to the walls throughout the downstairs, including the dining room. Above: The dining table, set for lunch. To create more visual interest, the couple added beadboard walls in the family room. These not only complement the lines of the beamed ceiling but also create the sense of more height. Keeping the feel fresh but still inviting, Tara chose Perfect Taupe by Behr for the wall color. They also added the built-in seating area and storage on either side of the fireplace. Above: In the downstairs bath, Percy built the sink from poured concrete and reclaimed wood. Tara added a vintage mirror, painted black to match the trim around the shower, flanked by sconces from Schoolhouse Electric. Above: Using reclaimed wood, Percy transformed a closet with an awkward pullout desk into a rustic bar. Above: Vintage furnishings sourced from the Brimfield flea market complement the historic character of the living room. Only the milk glass pendant lights are new, from Restoration Hardware. Above: Chock-full of original details, including the exposed beams and these hand-planed cabinets, the living room needed little more than furniture, a fresh coat of trim paint, and Percy’s plastering on the walls.




Above: To create much-needed storage without eating into the room, Percy built a restful nook using repurposed vintage doors and drawers. Plaster walls and Broadwick Fiber’s Chunky Knit Wool Blanket complete the cloud-like feel. Above: A detail of the bed nook, complete with a niche for books. Above: The upstairs bath benefited from existing dark, wide-plank floors and a vintage tub. To emphasize these even more, Percy created an accent wall of rough paneling. Above: In the guest bedroom, Tara demonstrated her genius for mixing new and old, as well as high and low, pairing Farrow & Ball’s Beautifully Woven Wallpaper ($230 a yard) and West Elm bedding, vintage accents and art, and a lamp from Target. It was a cute little Cusinart that also made yogurt and sherberts. I just had to have one. I had this romantic view of making my own ice cream with natural ingredients; none of that stuff from the grocery store. So I searched to find the cheapest one, bought it, brought it home  – and left it in my pantry.




That ice cream maker came to mind a week or so ago when I spotted an old-fashioned hand crank ice cream maker at auction. It was practically hidden away under an outside table at one of my favorite auction houses. It didn’t look to be in very good shape: The narrow metal bands around the outside were rusted, and the green paint on the wooden bucket had worn away in spots. On one side was the faint outline of a label. The hand crank identified it as a White Mountain Freezer. Inside, though, the dashers, scraper and can – I learned the names of the parts by Googling – were clean and in good condition. With a little cleaning, the ice cream maker would be ready for use. One auction-goer wondered what was the point of making your own ice cream when you could easily buy it at Cold Stone or a lot of other ice cream shops.Because the idea of sitting for up to an hour cranking your own ice cream is a lovely image. Well, at least in my head. I could imagine it being very popular at a family reunion, having the kids taking turns churning or even the adults if you can get them talking and remembering about when they churned and the sweet results of their hard work.




I have a sense of my family having a hand crank ice cream maker but I don’t have any memories of it. I’m sure that many other Baby Boomers do. It was an economical way of having ice cream around. On the web, I found a manual for the White Mountain maker (which, according to its logo, was first made in 1853) that identified a woman named Nancy Johnson of New York as the inventor of the ice cream maker. It was a “crude, but easy-to-use” apparatus that she did not patent, according to the manual. Wikipedia stated, though, that she was from Philadelphia and received a patent in 1843. Another site said she was from New Jersey and got the patent in 1846. A third acknowledged some of the discrepancies. Like Wikipedia, it stated that she got a patent in 1843. An African American man named Augustus Jackson is credited with inventing the modern process of making ice cream in 1832. The White Mountain manual also offered recipes for making ice cream using an electric or hand cranker, including vanilla, chocolate, pina colada and strawberry, along with some helpful tips.
