Verner Panton was one of the most influential designers of the 1960s and ’70s. He became known for his original and imaginative designs in the fields of furniture, lighting and textiles. Installations such as the legendary ’Visiona’ exhibition demonstrated Panton’s masterful use of colour, a hallmark of his work. In addition to his experiments with shape and colour, Verner Panton was enthusiastic about the design potential of plastic, a new material at the time. One of his ambitions was to create a comfortable, all-purpose plastic chair moulded in a single piece. Panton’s long search for a manufacturer led to his initial contact with Vitra in 1963. The Panton Chair, a collaborative effort, was developed with Vitra and finally introduced to the public in 1967. I am already registeredBorn in Denmark in 1926, Verner Panton studied at Odense Technical College before enrolling at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen as an architecture student. He worked from 1950 to 1952 in the architectural firm of Arne Jacobsen, and founded an independent studio for architecture and design in 1955.His furniture designs for the firm Plus-linje attracted attention with their geometric forms. In the following years Panton created numerous designs for seating furniture and lighting.

His passion for bright colours and geometric patterns manifested itself in an extensive range of textile designs. Panton's interior installations have attained legendary status. The most famous examples are the "Visiona" ship installations for the Cologne Furniture Fair in 1968 and 1970, the Spiegel publishing headquarters in Hamburg, and the Varna restaurant in Aarhus. Panton's collaboration with Vitra began in the early 1960s, when the firm decided to develop what became his best-known design, the 1967 Panton Chair. This was also the first independently developed product by Vitra. Verner Panton died in 1998 in Copenhagen. Vitra's re- edition of designs by Panton, as well as the retrospective of his work mounted by the Vitra Design Museum in 2000, bear witness to the special relationship between Vitra and Verner Panton.View the Verner Panton collectionCloverleaf In- and Outdoor Sofa by Verner Panton During the post-war era when experimentation in architecture and design was at a high, Verner Panton was among the first in Denmark to bring new industrial materials and technologies into his studio, including plastic, synthetic textiles and foam, where he produced organic designs often saturated in colour.

Danish designer Verner Panton launched the Cloverleaf sofa in 1970, its Pop Art inspired form part of an undulating wall-to-wall Fantasy Landscape installed at the Visiona 2 exhibition in Cologne – and a radical shift from the traditional roots of Danish design. Today an international design icon, Cloverleaf has been adapted for the outdoors. The main purpose of my work is to provoke people into using their imagination and make their surroundings more exciting. Always interested in the way furniture could shape experience and encourage connection, for Cloverleaf Verner Panton selected a pentangular form which is open on one side and hollowed out at the centre to provide legroom. Like a meadow of meandering clover, the backrest is snake-like and provides a large number of niches for sitting and conversation. The three sculptural pieces of the puzzle – left, right and middle – allow Cloverleaf to grow. It’s an awesome product, made exactly like the one Panton created...
