2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD 2011 GMC Sierra 2500HD Learn More About The Service Utility Truck pickup trucks are as common as cars as an everyday passenger vehicle these days, but they were originally designed for work. Stronger and heavier than a car, trucks haul tools and materials for almost any job, while being small enough to stay economical. As they became more popular, the average pickup truck became more comfortable and easy to drive. Serious work trucks began to focus on adapting to specific jobs. So, what makes it a Service Utility Truck? - Typically, it has to have plenty of power and enough room to carry the intended load. However, there are plenty of smaller vehicles that fit the classification. The only consistent factor is that it is a truck or van that has been designed, built or modified to be used for doing a particular job or service. Most service utility trucks begin with the same basic parts as any other truck. The engine, chassis and drive train are usually all the same.

Most of the differences are in the cargo area, and the combinations of options is numerous. What are they used for? - There are too many different uses for service utility trucks to list them all, but we can put them into 3 basic groups based on the type of load they are designed to carry. 1. People - Some are built to transport people, like a shuttle or a mini-bus. These are usually built on a truck chassis, with a large passenger compartment that designed primarily for comfort. The suspension will be softer, and the body will sit lower. 2. Products - Panel trucks, or "Box" trucks usually have just one seat inside of a large cargo area. They are used to haul and deliver everything from mail and laundry, to potato chips and milk. 3. Equipment - Most similar in appearance to your standard pickup truck, these workhorses are used anywhere there is a job to do that requires tools and equipment. Large storage compartments on both sides of the truck bracket an open area in the bed that can be used to carry anything from a welder to a hoist.
