China, Malaysia, Mexico and others have pretty much sunk a lot of the manufacturing. RTG, Ashley, and others sell a lot of "Press board" stuff that looks good in the beginning, but I guarantee won't hold up as a family heirloom over the years. Bottom line is until the trade industry gets a level playing field, more will continue to go by the wayside. There are still lots of fantastic places to buy USA built items manufactured right here in good ol NC. High Point, Hickory, Thomasville and others all have marts and most will not hesitate to supply you a list of their inventory made right here. Price aside, I'd be willing to put the quality of "Our" pieces against the mass produced imports any day of the week. 35,888 posts, read 58,081,223 times 515 posts, read 1,331,404 times

Thanks so much Anifani. Again thank you for your time and help. I don't its true; its the return on investment/effort that matters. They have to lead a decent life and pay bills - with minute return on the effort they put in is not worth it. Sorry its an tangent discussion. We now own leather pieces, and I would prefer leather if we ever buy another sofa. But buy the best quality you can afford. I only buy retail for my clothing and personal items nowadays! IF I want something new that is VERY expensive, I 'test drive' it by buying it via CL first to see IF I like it, what all the 'bells & whistles' are or aren't, they quality, etc (ex: flat screen TVs, kids toys and baby equipment). I change my decor every few years but have eclectic taste, so again, CL has been very good to me! I DO my homework prior to buying everything. I check to see if toys or seats or beds have been recalled for any safety problems. I look in surrounding cities and states for similar items. I have a pick-up truck that I bought just for my Craigslist 'adventures'. When I am 'finished' with these items I either resell them for the same amount or a little less OR I give them away for free, again on Craigslist. It amazes me how many people move here, then buy a house full of things, then get transferred away to another city or out of the country!

Others, just have the disposable incomes to change or 'upgrade' all their electronic items every 4-5 yrs! COOL...post on CL because I am looking at it daily and ready to buy! I do this the safe way...I meet 90% of the people at the local Police Dept to make the exchange (no, they don't mind). IF someone balks at meeting there, I do not need/want what they are selling. I'd not buy/sell a big diamond ring via Cl (my choice) and younger kids (20-somethings) have to be careful and not go meet people after dark, alone, in places/cities they do not know well to buy things like the XBOX and cell phones, as they often end up getting robbed. I doubt I'd buy a car, but I did look at a lot of them via CL and paid for a 2 month subscription to AutoCheck to see what was being sold and what shape they were in. I'd still have met at the Police Dept to do any $$ exchange and I would make sure that anyone whose vehicle I was going to see knew I wasn't buying that day so they didn't assume I had a lot of cash on me.

I still remove all my jewelry but a cheap watch when I meet at the PD...just have to be safe and think ahead. I have met some of the nicest people via my Craigslist adventures. The worst that has happened was a family sold me their puppy because "Moma has just found out sheh has MS and cannot keep up with her and the other dogs (6 others). Then I found out, via posts on Facebook, they got rid of the pup because the mother dog was pregnant again and they needed to make room for more puppies. I still WON, as the pup was the BEST and healthy, just not a 'rescue' pup. Good luck and be careful out there! Originally Posted by elninaWe bought a new bedroom suite in 2012. We found a good quality headboard (really a bed), dresser w/ mirror, and nightstands by looking locally. This furniture is not cheap Chinese junk, although it is not made in the U.S.

As I understand it the wood is cut here, shipped to Malaysia, assembled there, and shipped back. The company is headquartered in OR, so it is local for us in the PNW. The pieces are made of solid wood, no cheap veneers, and the wood is alder, not some sort of unknown species from the tropics. The finish on them is fine, and the pieces are solid. This is not as high quality as top of the line furniture from the past, or the present. But it is perfectly OK. We also bought an entertainment cabinet from the same line, which looks and works great for our needs. Our leather pieces were bought new about 5 years ago. They have performed well for us. I believe they were made in CA. We own a very good quality computer desk and hutch. These two pieces are commercial grade, and they are solid. We have owned them for about 15 years. We bought them new. We just ordered a custom chair from Canadel, a Canadian chair builder. We like their products. We previously bought 4 great chairs from them, and used them around our oak table.
