Shabby chic refers to furniture that shows signs of weathering, gentle use and wear and tear while still being structurally sound. True unrestored antiques and vintage furniture can cost you a fortune, but it’s simple and inexpensive to turn any hand-me-down, flea market or garage sale table into a shabby chic masterpiece. Preparation Creating a shabby chic wood table isn’t difficult, but it can be messy, so protect your work area with a drop cloth. Either plastic or cloth will work. Work in a well-ventilated room if you are using spray paint, and don’t forget your goggles and painter’s mask. Remove any drawers your table may have, and take off or tape over the hardware. You can also apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly to keep the paint from sticking to drawer pulls or knobs if they’re too hard to remove. Sand your table lightly all over to rough up the old finish and give the primer or base coat an uneven surface to adhere to.
Work with the grain of the wood, not across it. Wipe the table down with a lint-free cloth that is barely dampened with warm water. An old T-shirt or linen dishtowel works well and won’t leave stray threads behind. Let the table dry completely. Base Coat One of the hallmarks of shabby chic furniture is the layering of two colors that either contrast with or complement each other. Black is the common base color, but you can use any color you like. A white base peeking out through another color gives a softer look, while red showing from under black is elegant and dramatic. Apply a thin, even coat of primer or base color with a primer built in. Let the paint dry completely, which can take anywhere from 20 minutes to overnight, depending on your climate and the type of paint used. Top Coat Not all types of paint are compatible with each other, so read the labels to make sure that your primer or base coat and your top coat will adhere to each other. Spray, roll or brush on your top coat.
This can be any color you like, so don’t be afraid to get creative. Let this coat dry for at least 24 hours. It’s desirable to have the bottom coat show through the top one, but if you want the contrast between the two to be more dramatic, apply a second coat. Let it dry for at least 24 hours so that paint will sand off smoothly rather than smudging. Finishing Sand the parts of the table that would naturally show wear over time, such as the edges, corners, legs and the top corners where people are more likely to set things. Sand in one direction only, stopping occasionally to wipe away the sanding dust with a dry, lint-free cloth. Do not beat your wood furniture up with chains because you can cause more than just cosmetic damage. Shabby chic is supposed to look gently worn, not abused. Finish your table with a coat of beeswax to protect it and give the new paint a soft glow.
