Jerry West was heartbroken when his beloved Australian cattle dog, Whitey, suddenly lost her ability to walk due to cancer in December 2010. “She seemed okay one day, and the next moment she was dragging her butt on the ground,” says West, 44, a supervisor for a power-line equipment company in Burleson, Texas. “It was shocking,” he says. After learning that a doggie wheelchair would cost several hundred dollars and take two weeks to receive, West built his own out of heavy-duty plastic piping and lawnmower wheels in his garage. Soon, “Whitey was zipping around in her new wheelchair,” he says. “It became like an extension of her body. She lived happily for another two years.” Whitey’s newfound zest for life prompted West to make wheelchairs free of charge for other dogs paralyzed by car accidents, arthritis and other illnesses. Through his Rolling Dog Project, West has sent approximately 80 wheelchairs to dog owners across the country who can’t afford one.

“I refuse to accept payment from the dog owners because, to me, that’s like blood money,” explains West, who does accept donations from non-recipients, mostly in the form of Home Depot gift cards. Once West receives a pooch’s measurements via email – whether for a chihuahua or German shepherd – he then builds the wheelchair in his spare time at night or on weekends. “I do this work because I know for many people, their pet is like a family member,” West adds. “It’s all about giving dogs a new lease on life.” It’s also saving them. “Jerry’s extending the lives of pets who otherwise would be put down,” says Janet Anderson, who runs a dog sanctuary in San Angelo, Texas, and has received three of his wheelchairs. “He’s a godsend for dogs with special needs,” she says. Wheelchairs For All Size Dogs Swap Share Recycle shared a post.If Dawn was working on a wheelchair for anyone please contact me Dux Benny and I will see to it the message is relayed .Today I started the new year with the loss of a dear sweet friend, Dawn Jarman. Dawn was instrumental in getting Dux his wheelchair from her volunteer work with... the Rolling Dog Project. She started her own branch of the project called RollingPup. Dawn was a great lady and a dear friend. She will be greatly missed. I was thinking I had dodged the bullet this week when I nearly lost Dux who was very ill. He has pneumonia and nearly died from diarrhea that sapped the life out of him. He is better now. I can't help but think the last thing Dawn told me last night was she was sending some eucalyptus oil to help Dux breathe. She had breathing problems herself. She was always thinking of others. Rest in Peace Dawn! God has a new Angel in Heaven. Happy New Year to all. I hope your New Year is brighter. Wheelchairs For All Size Dogs Swap Share Recycle shared Carol Huckaby's post.

This is typical of what happens to some dogs when they become crippled. They are tossed out. They really CAN have a wonderful life with a little help. This dog is in California Ty for reading.... A leader of troops to battle as in war. A name so befitting of such a hero. I would do this all over again if I had to.

I just wish I... could have had time to prepare. I never knew what was in store for him. Such a healthy boy all his life. Not even an itch, then this. My boy is now a prisoner of his own body. A prisoner of war. The battle is called DM. Degenerative Mylopathy is so heartbreaking it's so hard to understand, why? I pictured him getting very old and frail, but still standing and walking. Just a loyal old dog with stiff joints. Still guarding the house and doing a perimeter check before retiring for the night. Then one day, way past the age of most Shepherds, maybe at 15 or 16 he would do his last tour of duty, then the final two and a half turns before laying down to sleep for the last time. His end of watch. That's what I thought it would be like. That's the way it should have been. He is still remarkably healthy in spite of his bout with diarrhea that almost took him from me the end of last year. If only he could walk again. How healthy he could have remained to live out this scenario that I had played out in my mind.

His mind is still willing but the signals have been short circuited. It's like in a power failure. You keep flipping the switch but nothing works. The blackout will soon affect the entire grid of his being and the lights will soon go out forever. The power is gone, the job started...never completed. The tour of duty and the end of watch of a courageous German Shepherd Dog was reduced to becoming totally dependant upon the one he so valiantly vowed to care for his entire life. What's even more amazing is that he has adapted to his new role with dignity and acceptance. He won't let his pride take him down or stand in the way of making me, his human happy. How humble is a dog that will give up so much to please us? As long as we are happy, they are happy as well. Never disappointed in our failures or inadequacies. Never blaming us for what has happened to them. They just accept us for who we are. This is unselfish love. A love that has no agenda. A love so pure and simple, we can take it for granted.

Unless we open our eyes and see it from their point of view we will never understand the meaning of loyalty. It's a perfect love and it's a reflection of the love that only our Heavenly Father can bestow upon us. A sample of the love of God was given to me when he blessed me with my doG. og Days Event | Bass Pro ShopsWheelchairs For All Size Dogs Swap Share RecycleSorry for the delay! Really a miracle lift helper. Before that we had all failures even though they were made to lift. The straps were too long or they would put pressure on the lungs ( they looked like a blue girdle pictured here) Finally a harness with straps close to the dog where I could lift without dragging it stepping in his feet! Our boy was paralyzed at both ends and we lifted him waist high to get him in a...nd out of his quad cart. The hand grips were even comfortable in our hand! Not cutting thin nylon straps. Actual rubbery handles. W

e have never seen or used a better harness. We could leave it in him or relive it without struggling to move him. Also we could unclip at the center and remove the front end for our comfort he seemed perfectly comfortable to keep it on. I have been recommending the harness since he got sick over 6 years ago. Whenever I see a post I can't help but share his info and how wonderful the Help'em up harness is. This also helped with the pain in my elbow from lifting him with the other harness. 💕💕💕 / Wheelchairs For All Size Dogs Swap Share Recycle shared a memory.Variable a axle PVC design for dogs with DM.
