When considering careers, repairing dental equipment might not be the first thing that comes to mind, but it is a necessary task. Dentists do not often have the time to repair their own equipment and are often so busy that if a piece of equipment breaks, they need someone to fix it quickly. 1. Apprentice with a dental equipment repair professional. This is the most direct route into the business and gives you the chance to work on different types of equipment at different offices. 2. Take a training course in dental equipment repair.
Some courses offer just the knowledge of how to repair the equipment while others will, for a fee, set you up with the tools and parts needed to get started. 3. Talk with local dental offices and find out what types of equipment they use. Obtain the user manuals for the equipment and repair videos. Study the manuals and videos and learn about how to troubleshoot and repair the equipment. 4. Find out what tools you need to fix the equipment. Obtain those tools as well as any parts that you should have on hand. Some parts will need to be ordered special, but smaller, common parts can be kept on hand for a simple repair job. 5. Ask a local dentist, perhaps your own, if you can practice your new skills by giving his equipment a once-over. This will help you familiarize yourself with the equipment and can give your dentist the opportunity for free maintenance. 6. Obtain used equipment to practice on and use for parts. If you can, search online auction sites and dental association newsletters for used equipment you could use to practice fixing.
If you fix up a used machine, you could resell it at a profit.
