Ryan McVay/Digital Vision/Getty Images Everything has a life expectancy, including office furniture. The life expectancy of furniture is based on its expected usefulness, which accountants call a depreciation rate. The IRS allows you to deduct depreciation against revenues to give a better representation of a company's financial situation.

The depreciation formula is simple: cost divided by life expectancy. Once you know the depreciation rate, you can deduct an annual amount over the life expectancy of the furniture. 1. Read the receipt and look at the cost of the furniture before sales tax. The cost is what you can depreciate, not the taxes associated with it. Assume the retail cost of the furniture is $5,000. 2. Establish the life expectancy for the furniture. Better quality furniture in low-traffic area of the office has a longer life expectancy than a reception room sofa. Ask sales representatives and use personal experience to determine how long it will take before you need to replace the furniture. Assume it will take seven years. 3. Enter the numbers into your formula for depreciation. Depreciation equals retail cost divided by life expectancy depreciation, or $5,000 divided by seven years. 4. Calculate the depreciation. Based on the assumptions, depreciation is $714.28 per year for five years. You can write off the $714.28 per year for five years.

So you have the Grace Chair and Jacqueline Console, says Amrita.

Whether a bright yellow chair or an antique wooden study table; the right piece of furniture can tie a room together. Architect and interior designer Amrita Thomas certainly thinks so, and set up That One Piece with her brother, Arjun Thomas, to make furniture which is not only functional but beautiful. “The idea is to create pieces of furniture that stand out,” says Amrita. “Furniture which could be considered as a work of art.” An alumnus of the prestigious Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology, Ahmedabad, Amrita found while working in Chennai, that there was a lack of choice when it came to furniture in the market. She wanted to give her clients more options when it came to designs, colours, and fabric. Thus, That One Piece was conceived. Based out of Bengaluru, the company prides itself on its designs, quality and finish. As of now they have four lines of furniture out, “Each line is named after a flower, so we have Zinnia, Borage, Quince and Calla,” says Amrita.

“The symbolism associated with the flower inspires the theme of the line.” Zinnia, which signifies remembrance, consists of vintage inspired furniture. While recalling times past, the furniture is given a modern twist by way of the choice of paint or fabric used. So you find a classic looking chair that is covered in bright orange fabric. The furniture under the Borage line is young, bold and edgy. Case in point, the funky chairs upholstered in newspaper print fabric. Mirrors, mirrors everywhere when it comes to Quince; to represent temptation you find mirrors used on the façade of consoles and side table in this line. Elegance and charm make up the Calla line, which consists of luxurious furniture with a quilted effect, bringing to mind Chanel’s classic line of bags. Chairs, ottomans, settees, chaises, occasional tables, bar tables and consoles, are found under the different lines. And each piece of furniture is further dedicated to a woman of substance. "I wanted to show that there was a woman behind the whole thing,” says Amrita.

“And also to bring a touch of femininity to the furniture.” So you have the Grace Chair and Jacqueline Console among others. Amrita says, “We use silks and velvets, gold and silver leaf, not to mention high quality leather in our designs; we want to create pieces with value that can be passed down to the next generation.” The wood used in the furniture is the finest Burma Teak, and some of the pieces are made using stainless steel as well. Much like fashion, That One Piece is all about reinventing and being up to date with latest trends in the world of furniture. The hottest colours of the season like aubergine, hot pink and bright orange find space in their designs. The bar console designed by them is bold and hip, with leather and rivet details; a far cry from marble topped bars or wooden cabinet bars which we are used to seeing. They are constantly revamping and creating. “You have to keep coming up with new, fresh designs,” says Amrita. “You have to get with the times so that you don’t get lost in the crowd.”
