Looking at our range of bifold doors you're probably wondering which bifolds are best for you and your home, Aluminium Bifold Doors or Composite Bifold Doors? This might not be an easy decision, but you're in the right place with a bifold door range that's full of choice. So which door material is best for your patio bifolding doors? A good place to start when considering which bifold door is always the material that you want your folding patio doors to be made from. The material you choose for your bifolds is the first decision to make - it's going to impact greatly on the look and feel of your home, so it pays to get it right. When choosing a material, there are quite a few considerations to take into account, such as the maintenance, the strength and longevity of a particular material, and also your own personal preferences regarding the finish of your bifolding doors. Aluminium is the most popular material for bifold doors, mainly due to its strength, slim sightlines and low maintenance.

Another great benefit of Aluminium Bifold Doors is that there are over 300 colours to choose from, allowing these bifolding doors to really become part of the overall design of your new living space. A wide variety of aluminium bifold door handles and bifold door sizes can bring perfection to your home. Aluminium windows and doors have come a long way in the last 20 years. Due to various technical advancements, aluminium windows and doors are now extremely efficient, as is the glass used to glaze the doors. The strength of aluminium allows the frames to be thinner, the benefit being that you will have a larger surface of glass, giving you a clearer view into the garden, and allowing even more light into the room. Not to be confused with the new material that many front doors are now made of. Composite bifold doors are manufactured from aluminium and then clad with timber on one side (mostly the inside). The advantage of composite bifold doors are that you got the strength, stability and reliability of aluminium while still being able to enjoy the natural character of timber.

The exterior aluminium face is powder coated, so unlike timber it won’t require refinishing every 3-5 years. The interior timber face can be stained, painted, oiled or left bare. Composite bifolds work well in both modern and traditional properties. The added flexibility allows you to finish the doors so they sit well in any surrounding. There’s no denying timber is a wonderful material and in the right environment and used for the right application it can’t be beaten. At Bristol Bi-fold we only want to offer the best available, but to achieve this with a timber bi-folds the price becomes considerable. We do offer the Sunflex 75 timber bi-fold, which is as good as it gets. If you would like a quote for this door please get in touch. There are lots of timber doors on the market that seem very reasonable. We have looked long and hard at every door on the market and we can’t find one in the low to mid range price bracket that we feel would stand the test of time.

When it comes to bi-folds we do have high expectations, but then our customers have high expectations from us, so it’s for this reason we don’t have a timber door that would fall into the bracket that most of clients are looking to pay for their bi-folds. Being the material that most of the UK's windows are made from, it is only natural to think that UPVC bi-fold doors would be the way to go, but we don't sell UPVC bifolding doors and there's a reason. As your research continues, you will notice that a lot of the specialist bi-fold door companies don't offer UPVC as an option, including us at Bristol Bifold. UPVC is a fantastic material to make windows from, but it lacks the strength required to make a decent bi-fold door. Windows have a relatively narrow span meaning the structure can remain strong, when it comes to new UPVC French doors, doors can drop and scrape; when you start to add 3,4 or 5 bi-fold panels together, you'll start seeing further problems. Usability can also be impaired at any time of the year due to weather conditions causing UPVC to expand.
