Days gone by, old uPVC doors would flex quite a lot, in fact the rigidity of certain doors was only maintained by the stiffness of the glass, if the door had some that is! The only way to get any sense out of securing the flexing blob of plastic in the frame was by installing a lock that would secure itself in multiple positions. Hence the reason why uPVC doors have multipoint locking. As time has gone by, however, steel inserts have been made to go in plastic doors and they are a lot stronger than they were thirty or so years ago. I have a love hate relationship with plastic doors I understand the durability they offer, but there is still a lot of old doors that quite frankly would be now a little worse for wear.
So what can you do to increase the security of a uPVC Door? You can’t fit shoot bolts on the door like you can on a wooden door, you can’t fit another dead lock as the lock already takes up the whole leading edge of the door. But what you can do is increase the security to the existing lock, or change the lock that is there. If your lock has roller cams only and not even a central bolt then it would not cut it these days and you will find that even insurance companies would look at wanting it replaced. The minimum you should be considering these days is a lock that ‘Projects’ bolts into the frame either by the hook type or straight type. and these locks should have at least three of these type of bolts.
