» » Despite rains, Hyderabad reels under water shortage HYDERABAD: Despite receiving 252 mm of rainfall over the last two weeks, several parts of Hyderabad continue to reel under an acute water shortage. At least so it seems from the high demand for water tankers supplied by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB). Rough estimates suggest that over 1,000 tankers from the board are making over 3,000 trips across the twin cities every day supplying water to areas including the entire IT corridor, the Secunderabad Cantonment belt and pockets located on the city outskirts. Apart from residential complexes, even commercial establishments have been left to the mercy of tankers owing to little or no municipal supply. The worst hit, incidentally, are the plush pockets of Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills that, water board officials confirm, are registering the highest demand of late. They are followed by localities such as Saroornagar, Shahpurnagar and Madhapur."
The municipal supply that we get every alternate day is not enough to meet even 30% of our total requirement. The borewells too do not help much as there is a restriction on the diameter of these bores (up to 4 inches), which in turn limits the depth of the wells. Hence, we have no choice but to depend almost entirely on tankers," said S Gupta, a resident of Banjara Hills Road No 2. This building gets one tanker every second day to suffice the needs of the residents. Subhash K of Brindavan Colony in Hyder Nagar had a similar complaint. "Since this area was previously under the gram panchayat, water is still supplied through PVC pipelines.The manjeera water, thus, is not enough to support 500-600 families residing here. We buy at least five tankers a day at Rs 450 per tanker. The cost is added to our monthly maintenance bills," he said. Adding to scarcity is polluted water flowing through the taps of many houses, again courtesy the heavy downpour that has left several sewerage drains overflowing.
Among those affected are residents living in and around Purana Pul and HMT Colony. Officials said that close to 100 tankers every day are being pressed into action to serve such colonies. "In case of water pollution due to deficiencies in the system or storm water drains mixing with sewerage lines, the normal water supply is cut off for 10 to 15 hours till the restoration work is done and tankers are supplied in the meantime. That is what we have been doing even now," added D Sridhar Babu, director (revenue), HMWSSB.
